Us here at Kmusic got the grand opportunity to interview Jay Park before his concert in Melbourne Australia.
Our trusted admin, Cammy, began the interview with general questions about his trip to Melbourne as well as his music career and concert rituals. Jay gave off quite a bit of humor as he answered the questions.
She then asked him questions on behalf of the Kmusic team who couldn’t attend the concert and his responses only got funnier.
Take a look at the interview video below:
Q: How are you feeling on the day of your first Melbourne Concert?
Jay Park: “I feel good man. The weather’s really good. Sunny, nice warm weather. I checked out the city this morning had some good food, Chinese food, and all I need to do is get ready for the show and we’re good.”
Q: Any special rituals you might have before going on stage?
Jay Park: “So I get completely naked, and then what I do is I rub butter… Nah I’m just playing! I don’t have any rituals. I just stretch, maybe some vocal exorcises, and that’s about it. Maybe like a quick prayer, ‘let everyone be safe.’ That’s about it.”
Q: What was your main inspiration behind the album ‘New Breed’?
Jay Park: “My main inspiration was just to put out a good album. That was my motivation. Because I didn’t have really a lot of songs that represent me, you know, as a solo artist so I just wanted to put it in peoples brains. ‘This is what kind of music Jay Park makes. Good music’ or if you don’t like it, what ever. But um, it’s good music, it’s these types of songs, so…”
Q: Do you go into hiding when coming up with the lyrics?
Jay Park: “Naw, I mean. A lot of artists do that because they feel like they get distracted and like, they can’t make music since they have these distractions so like, they go into a period of ‘hiding’ for a month or month and a half; they just don’t appear and just live at the studio. But for me, when I focus on the music, I just focus on the music, and when I focus on B-Boying, I focus on B-Boying. Its like I have so much stuff to do that I can’t go into a period of hiding.”
Q: What was it like working with Chase Malone (A.K.A ChaCha) and do you catch up with your AOM crew?
Jay Park: “Yeah definitely. I saw them recently in July. So, yeah man. I see them all of the time. Even Hiep Do shoots Jay Park TV; he’s from AOM so I see him all of the time. Chase, ChaCha Malone, he’s the dopest producer. He’s been producing for me since ‘Take a Deeper Look’ and he has a bunch of songs on the next album too which are going to be super good.”
Q: How long would it be until you complete your new album?
Jay Park: “I don’t know. It’s taken longer than I expected. It’s taken longer than the first album for sure because, I can’t say like, when it’s coming out specifically like ‘it’s gonna come out next March’ because then I have to get everything done by next march. I don’t wanna give myself a limit like, I wanted to get everything done properly and then release a date.”
Q: Have you tried an Aussie Meat Pie?
Jay Park: “No I have not tried an Aussie Meat pie. I’ve got to try it. I’ve only tried vegemite… It’s pretty salty. I was actually going to try to create a vegemite rice type dish. Because, it might go good with rice because rice sorta has a plane taste and this is a strong taste. But I heard people don’t really eat it with rice right? So I might cook a dish and come here and sell it on the streets or something.”
Q: What is the weirdest or most interesting gift you’ve ever received from a fan?
Jay Park: “Probably this Vegemite… (joking) I’m just kidding. I don’t know um. The most interesting gift… I’ve received a lot of gifts like underwear, studio equipment, meat, like big slabs of raw meat. I’ve received like, everything. Like, a rubber butt.”
[Cammy] From watching Korean Variety shows. Is giving meat a customary gift?
Jay Park: ” I have no idea. I don’t think so. No. It might be like, a prize or a gift but to give someone a cooler full of meat, I don’t think that’s, nah.”
Q: Out of all the female KPOP idols, who would be your ideal type?
Jay Park: “My ideal type? Ooh, man it changes from time to time. It changes, like it depends on my mood but, I’d say, who I think is like ‘pretty’ I think SISTAR is like, pretty. I think uh, this girl from Rainbow, her name is Woori, I think she’s pretty too.”
Q: What is the Biggest Highlight of your career and Future Goals?
Jay Park: “I don’t really have a Highlight because I’m really thankful for all of the stuff that’s happened so far. Just, for people supporting my music, even coming here and being able to do a show in Australia, like that’s crazy to me. Yeah man, I’m just thankful.”
Q: What would be your best holiday destination?
Jay Park: “I have no idea. Um… I’d say Melbourne.”
Q: What was your experience like at the MTV Concert in Melaysia?
Jay Park: “It was crazy man. There was a lot of people there. There was like tens of thousands of people there. It was crazy and just seeing Justin Beiber. Like, we rode on the same plane there. So, it was crazy! He’s like the biggest pop star in the world right now so it was an honor.”
