Well if you were of age and were so inclined back in 2012 you might have decided to make a trip to the movie theater, maybe with some girl friends (or guy ones if this tickled their fancy) to check out the Steven Soderbergh film “Magic Mike“.
“Magic Mike” was definitely one of the hotly anticipated summer films of 2012 and while many posted their disappointment in the plot of the movie and some posted their disappointment in some of the casting, it was still hugely popular.
Well, we here at Officially KMusic, felt that maybe with a different cast the movie might have been an even bigger success. Well in our eyes anyway!
Under great duress *snicker* I forced myself to sit down and look at what K-Idols out there could possibly fill the roles of this movie perfectly. I, of course, made sure to share the “pain” and called on my fellow editors and writers to help me get just the right list.
So check out our recasting of the “Magic Mike” movie below and let us know what you think of our choices in the comments.
First up was probably the hardest for me to cast. The role of Tarzan, originally played by Kevin Nash. Tarzan is the oldest stripper at the club and was probably mostly there for his physique, cause he didn’t have any moves, at all! I felt for our version a more versatile and able performer was called for so I choose Shinhwa‘s Jun Jin. Seeing that he has such strong dance skills I thought he could bring a side to the character that was missing in the original. Doesn’t hurt he has some pretty impressive artillery either.
Next up is Tito, who again spends most of the time in the background for the group numbers but does pull off a tidy little solo number about mid way through the movie sporting a navy uniform. So my first criteria for a replacement was that he would have to look good in uniform, it really didn’t limit my choices much. Tito is played originally by Adam Rodriguez who does do a great job giving off a vibe of control for his character. He has some pretty smooth moves and definitely makes you feel like wanting some one on one time but he does lack a certain showmanship. I figured the perfect solution to that would be to cast Jay Park who definitely does not lack in the smooth moves, control or showmanship departments.
Up to bat next is Big Dick Richie played by Joe Manganiello who is well-known for his very fine physique and who has not been in the least bit shy to share it. I’m kinda throwing a bit of a curve ball here with this choice. 2AM‘s Changmin has been on the cover of Men’s Health and has showed off his perfectly sculpted body in his duo group Homme‘s music video “I Was Able To Eat Well“. He is a very fine specimen himself and I don’t think he would have any trouble filling the shoes left behind by Manganiello.
One of Ken‘s solo shows is him playing as the “Ken Doll“, with his perfect features and dazzling smile my choice to play the role that Matt Bomer originally took on was an easy one. MBLAQ‘s Lee Joon was a hands down winner to take a turn trying to find his “Barbie“. They both can move and don’t mind shaking their hips and giving the gals a very sexy come hither look. Lee Joon could probably one up Matt Bomer in showmanship, I mean have you seen Lee Joon’s pole performance?
We can’t forget there are a couple of leading ladies in the movie. The first one we met is Joanna who is played by Olivia Munn and is the main characters on again off again sometimes girlfriend. Now Joanna has a couple of secrets that Mike doesn’t find out about till later and which causes him to get a little upset. But besides being somewhat of a hussy she’s also studying to be a psychiatrist so we needed someone from the list of K-Idols who could fill both roles. In throwing numerous names around we decided to go with Girl’s Generation‘s Taeyeon, she’s shown herself to be very multi talented and we thought she would handle the role well.
Now onto the main cast of the movie and probably the K-Idols you are most interested in seeing who was chosen!
Let’s start with Matthew McConaughey‘s character Dallas. He’s the leader of our rag-tag group of sexy men and while it isn’t until the end that he finally takes to the stage. Throughout the movie he charms the ladies with his introductions for the performances and doesn’t have to do much to get them screaming. Who better to fill the role than Rain, cause, let’s be honest, all he needs to do is smile to make the ladies scream.
Than we have our other leading lady, Brooke, played by Cody Horn. She’s literally the girl next door and full of overprotective feels for her little brother and all sorts of other feels for our leading man. This wasn’t really a difficult choice for casting, all I had to do was think “girl next door” and Suzy from miss A was the first name to pop into my head and that was pretty much game over at that point.
Who to play her little brother Adam, or as he becomes known as on stage “The Kid“. Maybe not the best choice, but Alex Pettyfer was originally cast to play the role in this movie and he didn’t do it justice. He’s baby-faced and can’t really dance, even though that might be part of the original script. After his one on one dance lesson with Dallas in the movie, he just doesn’t seem to get the groove. So obviously that needs to be fixed. We needed someone who could play 19 but who wouldn’t look like you’re robbing the cradle, someone who could shake their groove thang and do so to get the ladies on their feet. We tossed quite a few names around but in the end we had a dark horse jump out at us for the role. Eli from U-KISS U-KISS are sometimes overlooked as great dancers and I say that’s a shame cause those boys can move and Eli is no exception. And after those scenes in “Quit Playing” I don’t think I have any problem seeing Eli pulling off this kind of role.
So we have reached the end and the last recast for “Magic Mike”. The most important role, the leading man, Magic Mike himself. Now out of all the recasting this was probably the hardest cause Mr. Channing Tatum did not fail to impress in his acting or his dancing. So to choose someone with just as much charisma, just as much ability and just as much charm, who could we possibly pick.
We tossed so many names around Taeyang, Lee Seung Gi and Taecyeon to name a few but when this name came up it was such a perfect fit, we didn’t even discuss anyone else.
TVXQ‘s Yunho, is there really any other option? The man is a well-known actor, an amazing dancer and could probably charm the undies off a nun with just a smile.
So Officially KMusic readers what did you think of our choices, do you think that our Korean version of “Magic Mike” would be a box office hit or failure? Do you have other ideas for some of these roles? Or did we mix them up? Make sure you share your thoughts in the comments below and keep your eyes open for more of these movie recast articles, we have a lot of movies we think would be amazing with a K-Idol cast!
