It’s here, the first episode for the American version of the popular manga “Boys Over Flowers” which is under the name “Boys over Friends” has finally aired.
The drama that took four countries by storm especially with the 2009 Korean version which became an instant hit starring Lee Minho and Kim Hyun Joong, has even spawned numerous parodies from popular groups such as BIGBANG. This independent project was funded by a range of online fans who were excited for the remake. However, many fans remained skeptical while trying to keep an open mind that this would join its Asian predecessors in becoming a hit as well.
“Boys Before Friends” keeps the same theme from the love story from the Japanese manga written by Yoko Kamio of a middle class girl and four beautiful wealthy guys who just so happens to be cruel. The girl takes a stand and it’s war of the classes and sexes. While the original takes place in High School giving the viewer that typical stereotyped “high school drama”, in this version the characters are a lot more older. The characters are in their early 20’s living apart from their parents unlike the characters in the previous versions. In “Boys Before Flowers” the characters are all students at a performing arts graduate school.
In the first episode you see countless familiar bullying scenes among the interactions between all the characters such as, showing juvenile actions among the elite “F4” and the “F3”. In a behind the scenes interview, the cast gave word of advice to their possible viewers to expect a lot more out of the characters and to see what makes this version stand out. In the drama Zoey has a strong support group of friends who help and advise her as she struggles at a new school.
