Girl’s Generation has had a busy year from individual projects, making comebacks in Japan and the release of their third Japanese album ‘Love and Peace’, eventually taking it on the road for their third Japanese tour. The Girls are back and stronger then ever with their 4th mini album ‘MR.MR.’, proving they hold the ultimate girl power!
1. Mr.Mr
Mr.Mr is the titled song to their album, the song starts out with an electric vibe giving it a club-like feel. As the song goes into its chorus, which is sung by Taeyeon, Jessica, Seohyun, and Tiffany, the powerful and soulful sound brought by the back vocals really sets the tone as they ask ‘Mr.Mr.’ “what are you waiting for?”. It is understandable why this is their most popular song – it takes you back to their ‘Gee’ days with the complexity of mixed melodies along with the girls vocals that can be heard on ‘I Got a Boy’. This gives their album a strong start and showing their listeners this is why they are the winners of the 2013 YouTube Music Awards.
Their second song on the track is “Goodbye”.
“Goodbye” can be seen as the ultimate break up song – it is no more than an anthem to finding yourself after a break up, it reveals every girl’s thoughts as she moves on. The girls’ vocals are clearer, more pronounced, and full of emotion. Hyoyeon‘s vocals really stand out showing off her powerful voice along side the beginning beat, which sounds similar to American singer Micheal Jackson’s ‘Beat it’, then goes off to an infectious pop beat. Hopefully we all will get to see her release a solo someday. The lyrics are well written creating an imagery such as “hide like a shy diary entry” and “land of the midnight sun” which causes the song to stand out.
3. Europa
The third track has a futuristic yet retro sound to it, fitting the songs concept as they sing about being nervous around their crush. The nerve racking, butterflies in your stomach kind of feeling is present in the song as they talk about their hesitance towards skin ship, and even communicating with something as simple as ‘hello’. Regardless of all the inner drama, their hearts and minds just evolves around their crush. Something every girl and boy can relate to.
4. Wait a Minute
“Wait a Minute” follows “Europa” and goes deeper into the changes faced when you have a crush. From a new way of thinking to a new way of dressing . The song’s melodies and vocals and how they come together gives an upbeat show tune-type feel to it. The song is perfect for those summer nights that feels far away from now when you hit the beach hopefully for some summer loving,
5.Back Hug
A R&B guitar based song has a late 90’s early 2000’s beat, and is the album’s the slowest song. This saccharine ballad is about the simplest thing in the world that has the most meaning – a hug. It makes you think a lot about that special someone and makes you feel like Valentine’s Day is everyday. Its soft melody does wonders for the girls voices giving you a chance to hear them with new ears, much like with their second track ‘Goodbye’. Though the meaning of the song is pleasant and enjoyable it definitely leads you into wanting to feel more.
6. Soul
Their 6th and final track is a fierce one. It has the same energy and meaning as with their past single ‘The Boys’, showing they are not just the stars but highly desired. This pop single is upbeat and sure to make you move, and if you plan to exercise this is the song for you. The song starts off with a miniature monologue, “Ladies it is time for lift off, in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Time to blow it up.” This song may just be their next single to hit your YouTube screen. I can only imagine what their music video will be like from the setting, concept, outfits, and to the choreography, it’s a hit made in K-Pop heaven.
Sones will not be disappointed with the girls latest album, it is just the right amount of vocals. Each song indeed has its own personality showing the girls playing in a wider range that shows off their vocals more. The lyrics are composed well and certainly leaves you wanting more and rushing to go purchase their album after the first listening,
