Fun, colorful and somehow happy summer songs flood the music scene recently in the industry from various K-pop groups and solo artists, but someone by the name of Kim Jang Hoon recently released something out of the extraordinary. Kim Jang Hoon, also known as ‘Donation Angel‘ in South Korea, released a witty, satirical and striking new song, ‘What are you? (dear P. Politician or Pierrot)‘ .
In its music video description, it says, “As you can see from the title, ‘What are you?’ has a satire feeling to it. The subtitle is ‘dear P’, and P can mean both Pierrot and Politician in its ambiguous way. The meaning of the song and how you feel about it can be very different depending on what you put focus on. This song is an electronica style song that shows the soul of Kim Jang Hoon. It is a special song that has his shouting voice along with trot kind of feeling to it. It talks about the Pierrot who dresses very fancy but cries at the back, referring it to us, and also making fun of the politicians at the same time. It is an addictive song that has a hook song feeling to it, where you would be able to memorize it after listening to it one time.”
Zombies, vampires, ninja ‘shurikens’ and many more ‘weird’ or ‘strange’ imagery can also be found on the entertaining, yet enjoyable music video.
Check out the satirical and interesting music video below.

According to Merriam-Webster‘s definition of ‘satire‘, it is humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. And the video shows multitudes of symbolism and metaphors that reflects the situation of South Korea. A part of the music video also shows a parody of the recent ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘ film, where you can see individuals waving flags of the United States and South Korea, and somehow is similar with BIGBANG‘s music video ‘Bang Bang Bang‘.
Also, if we had to decipher it deeply, it may be a criticism of the current political situation and the military ties between South Korea and United States of America, or it may mean another thing. But who knows what it truly means. It is surely a progressive political music video with an interesting lyrics to it and at the end of the video, we are left with a statement that goes:
WE HOPED THIS WORLD TO BE A FLOWER
BUT THEN THERE’S YOU.
WHAT ARE YOU?
