Question: What made you want to start up your drawing blog and post Youtube videos?
Answer: When I was growing up as an aspiring artist, the absolute best thing for me was when I could get a glimpse of what my favorite artists were thinking, why they were using specific techniques, and what they were like as people. So any interviews, behind the scenes videos, or articles on artists were my favorite things to follow.
So when I started PixelReason, I wanted to offer that same type of thing. I wanted to start an art blog that felt comfortable, artistic, and welcoming to everyone. I wanted the viewers to feel like they could talk with me and I could talk with them.
Originally, the PixelReason.com blog started as a website that anyone could request artwork and I would pick one and draw it. At first, I was making the artwork to be used for wallpapers for cellphones (iPhones, Samsung phones, HTC, everything). The cellphone fan/developer online community is huge and full of really passionate people. It’s a way of life. It totally reminds me of K-pop fans.
Eventually, the blog was gaining a lot of traffic so I thought adding video would really help my audience feel more involved in how I create my artwork for them. Once I posted my first YouTube video, I was hooked. My first Kpop drawing was of Jessica (from SNSD) and it blew up immediately and became a featured video on YouTube, so I felt very encouraged.
Question: How did you get started with drawing K-pop idols?
Answer: I first got hooked on K-pop with KARA’s “Step” video on YouTube. It was a huge party for the senses. I was totally impressed by the visuals, choreography, camera direction, music, outfits, color schemes, charisma of the girls, everything. Then I quickly discovered SNSD, After School, BOA, Girls Day, and so many more.
After watching that first KARA video, I was inspired to start making doodles of the idols right away. I specifically remember sketching all 5 members of KARA on a post-it note while sitting in my car before a meeting. I looked at it and thought maybe other people would want to see drawings like this one. And life has never been the same again.
Question: Do you ever have troubles drawing quickly? If so, what type of troubles?
I’ve always been naturally fast at drawing, but it took countless hours and years to not have artistic “roadblocks” anymore. I can usually just work right through it now. That’s the biggest thing I tell beginners in art- Keep practicing relentlessly. If you practice anything (drawing, cooking, video gaming, ping pong, ANYTHING) everyday for months and then years, you will get better. Guaranteed.
That’s why I like Kpop so much. You see that Kpop idols are a combination of talent and a LOT of hard work.
Question: Did you ever think you would have such a successful reaction to your drawings? Especially the PSY drawing video?
Answer: I think the viewers can sense that I’m genuinely passionate about art and K-pop, so they give that same love and support back to me. Either that or my mom got a bunch of her friends to say thousands of nice comments on my YouTube channel. [laughs]
Kidding aside, I’m so appreciative of all the love and support everyone has shown me on my YouTube videos and on Facebook. Especially the Gangnam Style video (more than a quarter million views!).
Question: Do you want to branch out to other types of art? If so, what other types of art do you wish to branch off to?
Answer: Definitely. I have a lot of different interests that I want to mix together to make PixelReason represent a great place where you can come to appreciate a lot of different interests and artistic styles.
Also, I’m always thinking ahead about what I’m going to be adding to PixelReason to make it even more interesting or educational or just more entertaining. I think simple things like making all my videos in true HD helped create a better experience for my viewers. Then there’s little “easter eggs” I put in the videos for the hardcore fans (example: usually the “subscribe” buttons in the videos are the group color or favorite color of the idol).
I’m still experimenting with what we’re going to add first, but down the line, I’m aiming to start a series of tips and tutorial videos, Kpop song remixes, as well as short animations and some cool clothing merchandise too. It’s a lot of work, but if the reactions and support is good, then I’d love to do it.
Question: What inspires you to draw?
Answer: The act of drawing actually inspires me to draw. It’s like meditation for me. So just the idea of putting a brush to paper or pencil to the sketchpad is enough to make me want to do it.
That being said, I usually like drawing people that give off a certain emotion or feeling in their aura. Something that “glows” or “breathes.” I love drawing and painting and I’m grateful that people enjoy my art. I could draw just about anything and be happy.
You guys have a great website and I’m looking forward to more great articles.
