Hot issue K-pop girl group 4minute held their first solo concert in Australia at the Metro Theatre in Sydney last night. The concert was held in a very intimate venue with only 1,000 fans invited to party the night away. It garnered much excitement from Australian 4nias who queued for hours trying to grab themselves a ticket before they all sold out.
The two supporting acts that opened the concert were rap artist Newko, formerly known as The Chinga style and Dj FiLi. Dj FiLi came up on stage first, playing an awesome mix of songs from different genres like techno, K-pop and A-Pop. He opened with a strong beat followed by the introduction of the song ‘The Circle of Life’ from the film The Lion King. The songs the audience reacted to most were ‘I am the Best’ by 2NE1, ’High High’ by GD&TOP, ‘Bar Bar Bar’ by Crayon Pop and ‘Gentleman’ by PSY. Much to the surprise of the crowd, Dj FiLi also played ‘Run the World’ by Beyoncé and started dancing at the front of the stage showcasing his multiple talents.
A slow song came on and Newko entered the stage while rapping to the song that Dj FiLi was playing. Newko had a strong charisma when alternating between rapping and singing; he engaged the audience by talking to them in Korean and making them respond in Korean. Newko was flirting with the crowd, asking if there were any Korean girls and was “checking to see if they’re beautiful.” The males in the audience made gagging noises over Newko’s flirting which caused a bout of laughter.
Both opening acts were pumping up the crowd and making sure they were chanting for 4minute to come out on stage. After a while of screaming, a video appeared on screen showing all their title songs with snippets from their music videos and screams erupted throughout the crowd. 4minute entered the stage and started to perform their big hit ‘What’s Your Name?’ followed by ‘Is it Poppin?’
Jiyoon greeted the crowd first by yelling “Wassup Australia?” and complimented Australia saying that “It gets more beautiful every time.” After intense dancing and singing, 4minute slowed things down a bit by singing one of their lovely ballads ‘Pretend.’ Fans immediately began to sway and sing along loudly. They then continued to wow the crowd with their perfect choreography by performing ‘Huh’ and ‘Mirror Mirror.’ 4minute kept asking the crowd in Korean if they were having a great time and the crowd never failed to respond back loudly and happily. The girls couldn’t keep the smiles off their faces whenever the crowd cheered. So much so that Jiyoon said, “We’re tired, but we get the energy from our fans” which touched the hearts of all in attendance.
Next up was one of their big hits ‘I My Me Mine’ which earned a loud response from fans as all of the members participated in Jiyoon’s dance break. They continued with their debut song, ‘What a Girl Wants’ and ‘Heart to Heart’. Hyuna hugged Sohyun and smacked her bum which made the audience go wild over the cute interaction. They made sure to interact with the crowd at every side of the stage so no one was left out. As Jiyoon announced that there were only a few more songs left before the concert ended, fans were upset and began shouting out for more.
They ended their concert with ‘Hot Issue’ and then left the stage while waving goodbye to fans. Fans were demanding an encore and screaming when suddenly Jiyoon’s voice could be heard saying, “We can hear you” in a playful tone. The girls came back out on stage yelling, “Do you want an encore?” and then played a remix of ‘What’s Your Name?’ followed by a remix of ‘Hot Issue.’ Hyuna poured her water all over Sohyun’s head, followed by her own, and then proceeded to pour it onto the crowd which earned her a loud response from excited fans. The members hugged each other before leaving the stage once again and exited with big smiles on their faces. As they were walking off, the girls made heart signs and waved goodbye.
4minute’s Party Rock Concert was a huge success. The strong connection between 4minute and their fans was beautiful as they partied the night away with endless chanting and dancing. It was a truly memorable night which I’m sure fans will never forget.
