Prepare yourself for the second chapter of our new segment, KMusic Guide For Newbies where we will cover boy-groups that every K-Popper should be familiar with.  We know you’re new, we promise to make this as gentle and easy as possible!

We’ve all been new to this life and we all remember how hard it can be to keep everyone and every group straight in your head as well as the struggle of trying to figure out who to listen to.  One thing that you’ll quickly find, and that we’ll explain in depth in a later article, is that everyone in K-Pop is connected to each other in some way.

This is the list of essential boy-bands in our opinion and we will list the groups in alphabetical order so as not to play favorites or confuse you too much.

B.A.P

B.A.P is an acronym for Best, Absolute, Perfect. They are group of boys who debuted in 2012. with the song Warrior. It is a really good way to start knowing B.A.P and their music style.

Beast (B2ST)

Beast is a six member group formed in 2009 by CUBE Entertainment. Even if you are new in K-Pop, you really should know Beast. They are one of the most popular idols today, gaining recognition by wining multiple times with their every comeback. They have been in the industry for some time making their own musical style and releasing a a large library of albums (2 full length Korean albums, 7 mini-albums and one Japanese full length with various singles).

BIG BANG

Even if you are new in K-Pop you must have heard about BIG BANG! This group made K-Pop into what it is today, a globally known music genre. They made so much changes in K-Pop industry that they are considered living legends. They debuted in 2006 under YG Entertainment with La La La. They have come a long way with hard work and good music.

Songs: Haru haru, Bad Boy, Love song, Fantastic baby, they are also very popular as solo artists. G-Dragon: Crooked, Crayon, One of a kind, Taeyang: Ringa linga, Wedding dress, Eyes, nose, lips, T.O.P: Doom Dada, Turn it up

BTS (Bangtan Boys)

Bangtan Sonyeondan, Translation: Bulletproof Boy Scouts. They are seven member hip-hop group debuted in 2013, under BIG HIT Entertainment. For the beginners in K-Pop this group is a must know! Those boys are not what would you expect from “idols”, there are not enough words to describe Bangtan, you’ll just have to see it for yourself. They debuted with the song “No More Dream” . Check out some of other amazing songs.

EXO

Is a ten member boy group, debuted in 2012 under SM Entertainment with “History”,  they were 12 but after Wu Yifan (Kris) and Luhan decided to leave the group, the group was left with ten members. They are Chinese-Korean group formed to cover both Chinese and Korean markets. All the song are both sung in korean and chinese (mandarin). There is a lot to write about EXO and the controversy why the two members decided to leave the group, I won’t write about that, you can easily find out what happened on internet and make your own opinion. I am going to just present their music. If you want to know members little better you can watch their “Showtime” all subbed in english. A little reminder, this show was shot with all 12 members.  Here check out some of the songs from EXO.

GOT7

Is a seven member boygroup debuted this year in January under JYP Entertainment with Girls, girls, girls. These boys are one of the best new artists in 2014 with enormous popularity. As a newbie you should really check them up and follow in the future. They filmed various variety programs like IGOT7 and Real GOT7 two seasons. So you have a lot of material. Two member already debuted two years earlier as a duo called “JJ Project”, JB and Junior, but JYP decided to add 5 more members and debut them together as GOT7. Songs: A, and their latest comeback Stop, Stop it.

Infinite

Is a seven member boy-group debuted in 2010 under Woollim Enterteinment with Come back again. Infinite is a group who has distinctive music and amazing choreography with every song. Their members are known for perfect stage presence with synchronized dance routines. With so many singles and songs you can’t go wrong with choosing one to listen to.

SHINee

Is a five member group debuted under SM Entertainment in 2008 with Replay. SHINee is one of the groups who are really important to K-Pop in general. They have big fandom and enjoy immense popularity, both in the international market and the domestic one. With so many singles and songs you can decide with wich one to start, we promise, you can’t go in wrong direction.

Songs: Lucifer, Ring ding dong,  Sherlock, Dream Girl, Why So Seriuos, Everybody.

Super Junior

Also known as “Kings of K-Pop”, they are 11-member group (current number) who were formed by Lee Soo Man, former CEO of SM Entertainment back in 2005. They originally debuted as 12 members and a year after Kyuhyun joined the group as 13th member.  They are the group who is must know if you decided to enter into K-Pop, maybe you have heard of them or this is your first time… They debuted with Twins, on November 2005. TV5Q (DBSK – Rising Gods of the East) and JYJ

TVXQ is a group that once had 5 members, but after Yoochun, Jaejoong and Junsu filled a lawsuit against their company, SM Entertainment, TVXQ was left with two members,  Max Changmin and “U-Know” Yunho. The members who left formed another group named JYJ. In their own time they were the most successful group with over 13 million physical records sold since 2004, they are often referred to as “Asia’s Stars”, “Rising Gods of the East” and the “Kings of K-pop”, for their contribution to Korean pop. DBSK debuted with Hug, on December 2003. in a BoA and Britney Spears Showcase. History of DBSK/TVXQ is way too long to write everything here and what happened with the group, but if you are interested please read it here. This group is the only group that belongs with two generations of korean pop. We bring you some of the most famous songs with OT5 and OT2.

Is a five member rookie group that debuted this year under YG Entertainment with Color Ring and Empty. Even before their debut they had immense popularity gained through YG’s survival show WIN: Who’s next.

2PM

Also known as “Beastly Idols” is a six member boy-group debuted in 2008 under JYP with 10 out of 10. They are the first generation of “beastly idol” trend that nowadays is very popular (BTS, B.A.P). Former leader Jay Park officially left the group in early 2010, due to a scandal about a post on his personal MySpace account that was hacked and leaked, this was blown out of the proportions resulting his leave from the group and returning to United States.. The members of 2PM started when Korean musician Park Jin Young formed an eleven-member band known as One Day. Eventually the band was split into 2PM, and a similar but independent group known as 2AM.

Songs: A.D.T.O.Y, Comeback when you hear this song, Hands up, I’ll be back, Without you, Heartbeat, and other amazing songs.
