JYP boy group 2PM released their full length 3rd Korean album, “Grown.”
The album consists of 12 tracks, with input from several members of the group. They have returned with a more mature sound. The album contains smooth jazz numbers, upbeat dance tracks, and heartfelt ballads.
The first title song is “하.니.뿐.(All Day I Think of You.),” written and composed by J.Y.P, consists of a rap written by Taecyeon. It tells of how the man is going crazy because of the girl that he thinks of her, and only her all day. He is so in love with her that he can’t think of anything else, and it makes him go crazy. The falsetto in this song is bound to make any Hottest go crazy.
The second title song, which was the first music video released is of “(이 노래를 듣고 돌아와) Comeback When You Hear This Song.” This song and its rap are also written by J.Y.P and Taecyeon and is an upbeat dance track, which would remind one of a musical. Despite being an upbeat song, it’s actually about a man asking a woman to come back to him after he realized that letting her go was a mistake.
“(원점으로) Back To Square One,” or “Zero Point” was co-written by Hong Jisang and 2PM member Lee Junho. The song is asking the girl why she just smiles at him, and beats around the bush. It starts out slow and bittersweet, sweeping you into the chorus, with upbeat instrumentals.
“I’m Sorry” is a smooth jazz ballad, about the man reminiscing over their relationship, and asking the girl not to leave him. It has that sort of 90’s R&B feel to it. The men of 2PM harmonize very well in the chorus, giving the song a sense of harmony and balance.
“오늘부터 1일 (Today Marks The 1st Day)” is a light upbeat love song. They describe the overwhelming feeling they get whenever they think of the girl. This song is perfect for the coming summer season. It’s the kind of song you want to go on a walk or ride your bike to, or was it just me? I also like how the rap also kept it’s upbeat nature, instead of dragging the song down, like it could have.
“Dangerous” brings us back to another jazz ballad, by Ryan. The man is infatuated with a woman he has just met. He thinks of her day and night, wanting to be with her, despite the fact that she is with someone else. But, if she can’t part with him, he can accept the fact. This makes her dangerous, and that’s why he wants her. I would have liked them to harmonize a little better when the chorus hits and they all sing, “Dangerous.” The instrumentals really add to the song. Instrumentals can either make or break a song, just like lyrics. Though the chorus is a bit lacking, the instrumentals back it up and make it better. Then when the climax of the song came, I was somewhat disappointed. There’s a break in the song, and I expected some sort of great note to be hit, but it just went back to the chorus.
“오늘 하루만 (Just For Today)” is yet another heart wrenching ballad. This song tells about how he feels miserable and pathetic, but will only stay like this for one day. After today, he will put his life back together and move on. The song is quite balanced. There’s not a voice or a part of the song that is too overpowering or that stands out too much. All in all, it’s an okay song throughout. It’s not blowing my mind, but it’s not putting me to sleep either. Near the end it starts picking up, which is nice, and then has a sweet simple ending.
“Game Over” is a powerful song about a man whose heart has been broken by a girl who plays games with him. He’s over her and wants to move on, even though he still loves her. This song is a perfect foot stomping, fist pumping track. Something I could exercise to…okay, that was an awkward comparison. But that’s what it makes me think of. I want to run on a treadmill to this song.
“Coming Down” comes after such a powerful song, and lets us back down into a slow jazz number. The man is reminiscing about the times they were together. Taecyeon’s raps are in perfect English, and written by the singer himself. This is a very sensual song. Just listen to Taecyeon’s rap. Ooh, so sexy.
“(고백) Go Back” is an electronic song also written by Hong Jisang and Lee Junho, that tells of the man’s regret of the previous relationship, expressing his wish to go back before he knew her. He’s not satisfied in the relationship and has lost all interest, so he feels the need to break up. The rap is written by Taecyeon. It starts off quite mellow, making you think it’s going to be just another ballad. But wait, there it is, leading up to the chorus, the drums kick in and practically shove you into a dance. And then it drops you back into the ballad. I don’t know how to feel about this song. It sounds nice, but I don’t like the yo-yo feeling going from ballad to dance pop.
“Love Song” is also co written by Hong Jisang and Lee Junho and is yet another smooth, jazzy ballad. This song tells the woman how much he loves her, and how much she means to him. It’s rather romantic, and the chorus is sweet and beautiful. It’s got that sort of lazy-summer vibe to it. I just wanna lay on the grass listening to this song. Taecyeon’s rap fit quite well with this song. It wasn’t jarring, and it didn’t upset the pace or rhythm of the song whatsoever.
“(문득) Suddenly” is the final track of the album composed by member, Jun. K, and is a Korean remake of “Hanarete Itemo.” It’s a very slow, sweet ballad and it tells of the man not being able to forget his love even though they are through. There is just enough power in the chorus to contrast the overwhelming sadness of the verses, but not enough to overpower the ballad.
