Ailee has returned with her third mini album Magazine! Often dubbed the ‘Korean Beyoncé,’ the power vocalist has not disappointed with her most recent comeback. Containing a total of five tracks, Ailee produces a consistent level of musical prowess for each.
Title track ‘Don’t Touch Me’ is an upbeat, empowering song possessing a vintage atmosphere provided by the instrumental containing the piano, claps and tambourines. The repetitive arrangement of back up vocals within the chorus further cements this ambiance. It is a gorgeous song that takes full advantage of the vocal abilities of Ailee while blending well with the message of the song. Containing lyrics like “Oh stupid, think about it are you that slow? You will regret losing me who shines Let go of my hand, I don’t want to see you.” This relates to a woman who knows that the relationship is over. She has moved on and she is still strong, “I won’t go back to you I don’t love you I’m out! I’m out!”
The following song is ‘Crazy’ which features the rappers Dynamic Duo. This song has a very relaxing hip hop and jazz vibe creating a distinctly romantic mood. It is a smooth fusion of tasteful vocals and rapping. This heartfelt track is about a person who earnestly loves someone despite all their flaws and their differences, “I love you, your complicated lips Your small acts of jealousy that you try to hide.” It is accompanied and made clear by the line “Still in love with you.” This song is one my definite favorites.
We are then eased into the ballad ‘Goodbye Now.’ It is a song of heartbreak and moving on. “I threw it all away the times with you One by one, without you, I’m forgetting…Goodbye Now, Goodbye for real, leave me Forget all the times we spent together.” It is a touching piece that does not overshadow the lyrics with powerful vocals. It is a soft ballad that I believe represents the vulnerable state of a heavy heart.
Next track is “Love Sick.” Featuring a stuttered strumming of an electric guitar, it is a feel-good song despite its lyrics. “I’ll try erasing you I won’t think of you anymore Just once, just twice Thought it might be hard” is about someone who is love-sick. They are trying to forget their earlier love but they are experiencing the typical difficulties. It is hard to forget the memories that made them truly happy and in love.
‘Teardrop’ is the last song in Ailee’s extended play. It is a passionate R’n’B track that incorporates layers of repetitive beats and synthesizers, creating a distinct sound that is common in Western music. This song is composed and arranged in a way that sounds like a typical Western R’n’B song. Despite this it is one of my favorites. The true image of broken heart is accurately portrayed through the lyrics, “Tears fall down My heart starts to beat (when I think of you) My heart cries My world falls apart.”
Each song is very well done by Ailee in this mini album and I am truly impressed. I feel that her vocal ability has improved and represented properly in ‘Magazine.’ I do recommend this album if you are a fan or if you are looking to try listening to a different artist. I am looking forward to more from her. What is your favorite song from ‘Magazine’?
