G-Dragon is BACK! You have no idea how long I have waited for this! One of the most exciting entertainers in K-Pop to watch, in concert or in a music video, G-Dragon brings back the brand of crazy that only he can with his latest music video, “Coup De’tat.”
Watch it here:
“Coup De’tat,” for those of you who don’t know, means to “overthrow” an existing state of establishment. I believe in G-Dragon’s case, that he means to overthrow the music business’s image of him. If you look closely, you’ll see his “Heartbreaker” face mask, dripping with black tears as he emerges from a mask himself, donning black face paint, and going against the norm.
The media, in the scene where he is upon a pedestal surrounded by people, are blindly bombarding him. At the end of the video, you can see the image of him in the beginning, wrinkled, upon the ground, break free and shed his skin, to reveal a new image, and going against ‘the establishment.’
The video and song are full of symbolism that doesn’t take much to understand. But whether you take it at face value or search for the deeper meaning, either way you’ll find one of the best comebacks of 2013, if not the best.
His latest album, “Coup De’tat Part 1” is available on iTunes! The album features his second collaboration with Diplo, American rapper Missy Elliot, Lydia Paek, and YG rookie, Jennie Kim.
