After three long years of hiatus, Solbi made a comeback with her mini album “Solbi is an Ottogi,” which consists of five tracks. Her title track is called “Ottogi,” meaning ‘tumbling doll’ in Korean which is similar to the Weeble or Roly-Poly toys Americans played with that were distributed back in the early 70s. The song also features 4Minute’s Jiyoon.
There are actually three versions of the song “Ottogi,” the original that sounds like an electro Swing House style, the Latin House remix, and the Club Remix which instead features Ahn Hye Jin as the rapper. These types of songs integrate loops, samples, and melodies from Swing and Jazz, creating innovative compositions. So yes, “Ottogi’s” beat is annoyingly catchy, dragging you in for a listen even if you don’t want to.
The music video actually features the Latin House remix instead of the original and has a club theme. Most of the scenes comprise of Solbi either dancing among a crowd of people or with her back up dancers and several random scenes of her singing by herself. I guess one can’t help but direct a music video with this concept since “Ottogi” is a dance song but it was boring and typical. “The song is not so bad, the beat made up for it.” was what many people said about the song.
Have a listen and watch for yourself, are you caught up in the repetitive and rhythmic beat too?
