After months of waiting, NU’EST is finally back in Singapore and treated their fans to a full-fledged showcase dubbed ‘NU’EST L.O.Λ.E TOUR in SINGAPORE’, held at the Kallang Theatre on the 22nd June.
The boys certainly did not disappoint the some 1000 fans who arrived at the venue way before the starting time of the concert. On top of local fans, there were also international fans hailed from Japan and Thailand. The spectacular performance was nothing short of powerful dance routines and catchy hit tracks, and as promised, plenty of opportunities were given to fans to get up close and personal with NU’EST!
Due to rehearsals and probably a very packed schedule, the showcase was delayed by almost an hour. Of course, for the L.O.Λ.Es, the wait did not dampen their moods an ounce. Everyone was given a free ‘NU’EST L.O.Λ.E TOUR in SINGAPORE’ poster, and many bought light sticks in pink (the official colour of the NU’EST fanclub L.O.Λ.Es) and really cute NU’EST headbands.
The opening commenced with a video introduction as each NU’EST member’s face flashed across the big screen amidst a sea of screams. When the lights dimmed, the screams got louder. Within seconds, JR, Aron, Baekho, Min Hyun and Ren sprung into the electrifying dance of their group’s intro song ‘NU. Establish, Style, Tempo’. What followed was the equally catchy and heart pounding hit track ‘Action’. NU’EST definitely brought the ACTION with elated fans rocking to the beat!
After the opening act, NU’EST took turns to introduce themselves as the MC asked about the meanings of their songs. NU’EST strives to act as the spokesperson of the teens, and Aron (in English) explained that the song ‘Action’ encourages teenagers to take on actions to pursue their individuality and dreams, which should not be shattered by uniformity.
MC also asked members what they think about Singapore so far. Min Hyun surprised fans by commenting on how beautiful Singapore girls are, while Ren thanked Singapore fans for always giving him lots of strength. NU’EST also shared that they are currently busy touring and traveling quite a lot, but assured their lovely fans that they are all doing just fine.
As promised, fans got a fair bit of chances to be up close and personal with NU’EST! First was a special segment – a Q&A session with a whiteboard-full of questions and requests from the attending fans. Min Hyun jokingly said that despite all the fan mails they usually receive, it was the first time he had seen so many at one go!
Leader JR took the first pick, but it was written in Thai! A confused JR instead said ‘I love you’ to the Thai fan followed by a sheepish ‘Sawadeekap.’ Maknae Ren got a question that rendered the theater of fans giggling – ‘Would you date someone older, taller and darker than you?’ Making an OK sign, Ren shouted “Thank you! Okay!” One fan got lucky when Min Hyun picked her post-it with ‘Could I take a group photo with NU’EST?’ Of course, the boys would not disappoint.
NU’EST was then challenged to a quiz about Singapore. The fastest hand will get to answer the question. Ultimate winner? Of course it’s the fans! The answers to the quiz ranged from Marina Bay Sands to Night Safari. There was a huge ‘fight’ at the Merlion question since all members knew the answer, while Singapore Flyer proved to be a tougher question where Baekho even thrown out 101 tower and members said, “that is in Taipei!” In the end, fans had to shout in unison, not once but twice, that it is the ‘Singapore Flyer’. Another question that got all members spinning was ‘Dolphin Lagoon’, where Ren said ‘Dolphin Show’, JR ‘Dolphin Kiss,’ Aron ‘Dolphin World’ and Min Hyun even managed a ‘Dolphin Channel’. In the end, it was Baekho who proved himself with 3 points, and got to pick a fan from the VVVIP zone and went down to the seat to sign a CD with the excited fans’ cheering.
The third was an ‘Image Game’. All fans were asked to start the game by standing, and as each question was asked, fans will guess which member, for example, hate to take a shower and provide their answer by pointing out the number (1- 5) that represent the member. The members will then reveal the correct answer.
In anyway, JR was chosen as the one who does not like to take shower, to which he explained that it is not like he doesn’t like to clean but more like he showers really fast in 5 minutes. Fans who got the wrong answer will have to sit down, and the final remaining 5 will get to take a photo with one of the members on stage. The question that ‘killed’ the most fans was ‘Who is NU’EST’s playboy?’ Most agreed on Aron but the members revealed that it is actually Baekho. In the end, one of the female fan got real lucky when all members photobombed her photo with Min Hyun.
During the brief break, a heart-warming video of NU’EST members shown googling and diligently doing research, with captions like “we want to know Singapore better, so we studied hard” that touched many fans.
NU’EST came back strong and brought the atmosphere to a new high by performing 7 songs non-stop. The quintet boy group’s latest titled track ‘Hello’ was the perfect song to start the second part of the show. The soothing R&B ballad coupled with a neat but fluid dance choreography against a romantic moving backdrop mesmerized the fans. Next was ‘I’m Sorry’, with fans waving the pink light sticks and swaying to the melody.
Fans heard Ren asking if we had enough? Of course no! To everyone’s delight, NU’EST then started their light and cheerful dance steps to the song ‘Introduce Me to Your Noona’. With the catchy chorus “Wanna noona I, I wanna your noona”, the noonas in the audience must have felt the heat!
During the much-anticipated English version of the song ‘Sandy’, members went down the stage to interact with the fans. Aron explained that the English lyrics came from a female fan amongst the audience seating. NU’EST loves this version and vowed to perform it whenever they travel to an English speaking country as a gift to her.
The amazing dance abilities of NU’EST that goes way back to their pre-debut days as back-up dancers certainly shown in their song ‘Hello, Hello’. With the pumping beat, fans were all fired up and the performance climaxed. Already drenched in sweat, member continued the heat with ‘Not Over You’.
The last song was the none other than the debut song of NU’EST – ‘Face’. With a heavy urban electro feel, the iconic chair-dance captivated the crowd as all fans stood up and moved along the beat.
What is a concert without an encore? As the fans chanted, a teaser video with “Are you still there? Today’s show is quite long? Was it not enough? Do u still want more songs? I can’t hear you! Do u really want more? Alright then. Let the encore begin.”
NU’EST certainly came prepared as they surprised everyone by entering from the back of the theater down the aisle, and into a crowd of thrilled fans. Total fan service.
The last stage was ‘Beautiful Solo’, enlivening the atmosphere and left some fans in tears. Finally, most fans got the chance to Hi-5 their idols and some, an individual photograph.
With that, the exciting night came to a close.
KMUSIC managed to catch-up with a few fans. Pamelia (16), who came with her same-aged friends, said that she has been a great fan of NU’EST since their debut and have collected all their albums. She especially loves Ren, whom she mistook as a female member in the earlier days as her friends giggled and acknowledged.
NU’EST will conclude their schedule in Singapore with an autograph session at Bugis+ on 23rd June. Let’s anticipate their next trip here in Singapore and we thank JNation for bringing in yet another great concert!
