Mnet, one of the mega music and youth oriented television channels, mentioned that they are currently gearing up for a season 2 of their idol trainee show, ‘Produce 101’. In conjunction with CJ E&M. Mnet is looking for a late 2016 to early 2017 release of the new season.
The twist? Instead of 101 female trainees from across South Korea and a bit beyond, they are looking to produce a male version of this project. The premise of the show is fifty or so agencies sent in their trainees to participate in a survival show to try and get to the top eleven. Once the “Nation’s Producers” pick their top girls, the group will debut as a special unit and perform for one year under CJ E&M’s label. The girls are still a part of their own label and once the time is up, can still debut under their own agency.
Each week more girls get eliminated by public vote. The public will also choose the name of the group as well as their debut concept.
Many renown agencies participated such as Jellyfish Entertainment, MBK Entertainment, DSP Media, Starship Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, SS Entertainment and more.
There are even girls without an agency and some came as far away as Japan. Only two companies who definitely said no to participating were SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment.
As of right now, the production crew of ‘Produce 101’ will not start producing the second season until the first season is finished. Season one is slotted for 11 episodes and still has four more weeks to go. Mnet did confirm it will be a male version but the concept and ideas are still in the works.
I have been watching ‘Produce 101’ and I really like the idea. It’s great to see mentors like Jang Geun Suk, Kahi formerly of Afterschool, JeA of Brown Eyed Girls, Cheetah, vocal coach Kim Sung Eun, and choreographer Bae Yoon Jung helping these girls along. I have already seen so much growth from these girls. I can’t wait to see what the male season would bring! Are you watching ‘Produce 101’? Tell us how you would feel about a second season.
