NCT Dream are in the midst of a comeback this week with the release of their second mini-album ‘We Go Up‘ and the title track of the same name.
The most important fact of this release for Dreamies, is that this release will see the graduation of eldest member Mark from the team – although he will still remain a member of other NCT units, NCT127 and NCT U.
‘We Go Up‘ feels like a hybrid track for me, it allows the group to draw on the brash hip-hop sounds that we saw with ‘Go‘, but it also takes us back to the fun, bright sounds of earlier releases like ‘My First and Last‘.
The song kicks straight in with an excitable flurry of rap riding over a retro feeling backbeat. The addictive mix of percussion and a booming bass drive the track which sees a new breed of rapper step up to the mic. Mark has always been the group’s most well-known and featured rapper, however with his graduation imminent, it looks as if the mic is in good hands with Jaemin, Jeno and Jisung all delivering blistering hip-hop performances on this track.
The contrast of the rap with the harmonious vocal ensure that this track will stand up against any of the other NCT releases (from any unit).
In a nod to their previous hit ‘Go’, the chorus of ‘We Go Up‘ becomes more of a chant than a chorus, with the members declaring ‘We Go Up‘ repeatedly, which maintains the focus of the song.
The accompanying music video plays to the youth and exuberance of the members and features playful moments with bubbles, rocket ships, car washing and wide open spaces. We also get to see the choreography for the track, which is feisty and exuberant just like the song.
