‘The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale‘ was the first film shown at KOFFIA 2019 on day four.
Director: Lee Min-jae
Cast: Jung Jae-young, Kim Nam-gil, Um Ji-won
Genre: Comedy, Zombie, Family
‘The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale‘ revolves around a strange family (hence, the title) who discover a lone zombie and take it in. Although the zombie does cause some trouble at the beginning, the family discovers that they can make it rich with their new addition to the family. The film is a heartfelt comedy that shows how important the bond between family is. This strange family is forced to adapt to new ways in order to survive the apocalypse that is emerging.
The zombie, who is portrayed by Jang Ga-ram (just starred in ‘Love Alarm‘), is the cutest zombie I’ve ever seen on screen. His mannerisms and obsession with cabbages make him a lovable character who seems harmless. The love story that unfolds between him and the daughter is romantic in an adorable way. They save each other and show their love in different ways. My favourite scene was when she took him to the salon and he got a full makeover, transforming him into a really good-looking zombie. The audience was rooting for this couple throughout the whole movie.
Just when you think all hope is lost and the characters are doomed, one of the family members always pulls through to help the others. Hope is never lost in this film, because their bond is stronger than the doom that has fallen upon them. It also teaches you a thing or two about what it means to be human. There are hilarious scenes that will leave you laughing for a while. You definitely won’t see the twist at the end coming – it’s a surprise, for sure!
