The latest release from rookie group AlphaBAT gives the fans an unexpected dose of aegyo with their new song “Oh My Gosh!” AlphaBAT debuted last October and until now their signature sound has been a harder hip-hop sound. It seems that there was a decision made to see how their fans received a more cutesy concept and to be honest, it turned out pretty well.
Fans were a little concerned when the teaser for this video was released since it was obvious dramatically different. Not only was their last release (“딴따라 ” watch it here if you’re not familiar) in the same dramatic and heavy hitting like their debut, there were a series of rap teasers released a week before the teaser for “Oh My Gosh”. We talked about those teasers here. Seemingly out of the blue, the teaser for “Oh My Gosh!” is released and there was some confusion. Where was the new member they recruited in Malaysia? What happened to the hip-hop sound? There are no hard answers yet but not only is the song good, its video potentially offers some answers.
Before we get to that, let’s talk about the song. It is a typical adorable boy-band up-tempo love song however I really like it. I might not always like that kind of song, but when it’s done well, it gets an instant add to my playlist. This song has already been added to my rotation. It is cheerful and adorable without leaving the viewer feeling like they just ate something way too sweet. The video is acceptable, not the best I’ve seen and certainly not the worst. There is only one girl but it seems that only one of the members is interested in her so that’s a refreshing change. I really enjoyed watching the members trying to help him win her approval. The dancing is good, though I expected nothing less from AlphaBAT. They have very strong dance skills, especially for a rookie group. My only complaints is that some of the dance scenes are not well-lit enough, but that’s most likely due to them actually being shot outside.
Watch the video and then meet me down below for a little more conversation.
It has been pointed out that this video seems to have been shot in Malaysia, which is where they cast their new member. Perhaps this video was filmed before he joined the group? Also, the graphic at the top is missing his name. This has led fans to speculate that there could be another AlphaBAT video soon, which would be really fun!
What did you think about this video? Do you like their departure from their signature sound? A lot of times, fans struggle with the changes in style and content that their idols go through, I choose to view it as part of being a K-Pop fan! Never a dull day!
