On August 16th, popular girl group RED VELVET made a triumphant return with their comeback music video for ‘Queendom’. The track serves as the title track for their 6th mini album of the same name. This new MV marks the SM Entertainment act’s official return since 2019’s ‘Psycho’. Dropping their ‘The Reve Festival’ album trilogy throughout 2019, 2020 saw the quintet break into sub-unit and solo activities. This 2021 release shows the ‘Bad Boy’ singers’ continues to cement their prominent space with the industry.
Lyrically, the dance-pop anthem tells listeners that we are all kings and queens in our own right; that to become even stronger we must work together. Opening with a bold whisper ‘Queens’, the track shows the group’s main strengths of beautiful layered harmonies and solo vocals. The fresh upbeat nature fits right in line with the songstresses’ summery discography. Intermittent raps do not fall into a slowdown in the beat but rather compliment the track to give it variety in rhythm. It chorus with a combination of traditional singing, and an addictive vocable hook make for a light yet memorable listen.

RED VELVET ‘QUEENDOM’ MV:
The music video opens introducing all the members and their roles within a magical mail distribution centre. Notably, member Yeri is named as a trainee witch. As we see the members move around and interact with mailboxes, and disappear then appear in a flash, it is clear that all of them are witches. Travelling in a vehicle within the cloudy skies, they land in a mystical green clearing. With soft rolling hills and saturated and comically large flowers, the five members decide to have a tea party. Mail boxes start falling above before we cut to the final location; a purple spacey themed area. The girls dance sharply and brightly to the choreography as we see Yeri finally granted her magical wand, successfully completing her training.
The mini album contains six tracks that range from dips into pop, electro-punk and ballad, showcasing the 2014 debutants’ everlasting versatility within their discography. Whilst the digital version of the EP is available now, the physical version will be released on August 17th.
