In Reply 1994’s Episode 13, audiences are left shocked with a new pivotal moment.
Trash finally confesses his feelings for Na-jung through a passionate kiss, much to her surprise and not to mention audiences’ surprise as well!
However, even with this scene and the assumption that they are now dating, Na-jung’s husband has yet to be revealed. This is very frustrating as I myself am rooting for Chilbong and sympathize with him.
The scriptwriter brilliantly has Chilbong express his deepest thoughts through his narration as follows:
“It is said that in order to achieve success in one field, ten thousand hours are required. The ten-thousand-hour rule. For Mozart and the Beatles and Steve Jobs and Kim Yuna, it wasn’t an innate genius or good luck that created their success, but the effort and pain of more than ten thousand hours of work. It could be that work, relationships, and love are like that. In order to achieve that accomplishment, you can’t wait for an innate something to show up or a stroke of luck—you have to work hard and try and suffer till the very end. It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”
In an interview, Chilbong quotes New York Yankee’s catcher, Yogi Berra that “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.” This quote describes Chilbong’s perseverance to winning Na-jung’s heart. In a flash-forward to 2013, Na-jung’s friends mention that her father’s success in getting the famous singer Kim Min-jong to perform at her wedding was probably due to his determination that stemmed from his athletic background. This along with Chilbong’s new favorite quote perhaps foreshadows Chilbong’s ultimate success in becoming Na-jung’s husband.
Although I’m glad that the drama has been extended by one episode and that it seems that Chilbong still has a chance with Na-jung, I feel that the anticipation is being a bit overdone. Since there has been so many similarities to Reply 1997 so far, I really do hope that the ending catches us by surprise and does not follow the course of the original drama.
