In the lead-up to the release of his latest single ‘The Hardest Part’, we thought it might be fun to look back at a past Roy Kim song.
Roy Kim released the MV for title track ‘Bom Bom Bom‘ on April 21st, 2013. The song itself was released as a pre-release single on digital platforms the next day. ‘Bom Bom Bom‘ and ‘Love Love Love‘ were the title tracks of Roy‘s debut studio album, also called ‘Love Love Love‘. When ‘Bom Bom Bom‘ came out, it topped the Gaon Digital Chart for two consecutive weeks. It was also the fourth most successful single of 2013 as it sold more than 1.5+ million digital copies.
Roy Kim rose to fame after winning Mnet‘s Superstar K4. He was the final winner out of more than 2 million applicants. He applied for this show during his gap year between high school and university. Roy debuted by performing at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). The next year, he was crowned the ‘Best New Male Artist‘ award at 2013 MAMA. He enrolled into Georgetown University that year. Originally a business major, he later switched to sociology as he found it more practical as a songwriter.

After watching the MV for ‘Bom Bom Bom‘, I can understand why he won Superstar K4. It is not hard to believe that the audience fell in love with him. He seems really humble and down-to-earth. He also has an innocent boy-next-door look, which would instantly attract girls. Roy‘s voice is melodious, and even without the instrumental the song could still sound lovely. ‘Bom Bom Bom‘ is a chill and relaxing song that radiates positive vibes. When I listen to it, I instantly get into a good mood. The gentle guitar backing is really pleasant and satisfying to listen to. The literal translation of the title is “spring spring spring”. The lyrics sing about spring and love.
The MV is similar to the song – bright and cheerful. It mostly features Roy playing his guitar while singing in different scenarios, but in the same set. The blue sky setting stands out as it sets the mood of the song. It is obviously a spring setting as there are flower and plant props. The MV ends with cherry blossom leaves falling around him. This MV and song will undoubtedly put a smile on anyone’s face. It could definitely cheer people up when they are feeling sad.
