SHINee Was Called “SM5” Before Debut

Creating team names has never been easy for companies. The same thing happened to SHINee as they were called something else before their debut.

On the recent broadcast of KBS’ Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook, SHINee shared a story about its name.

SHINee explained how Lee Soo Man gave the group its name. They also shared that there was another name that SHINee responded to. Jonghyun explained, “Before our debut, because our company was SM and there were five of us, we were called SM5. It wasn’t an official name, but whenever someone called SM5, we all came together.”

Yoo Hee Yeol added that if there were seven members, they would have been called SM7.

Meanwhile, SHINee is currently in Jakarta to participate in KBS’ Music Bank in Jakarta.
