SHINee‘s Jonghyun is known for his outspoken opinion, which he frequently expresses through his his Twitter account. Yesterday when the singer changed his profile image to an hand-written poster.
The hand-written poster was written by a transgender student named Kang Eun Ha in the Social Sciences Department at Sungkonghoe University. The poster was written by the student as a statement of protest against the discrimination of the LBGT community.
After uploading this picture as his profile image, Jonghyun continued to explain to Kang Eun Ha why he did so through Twitter’s private message system. The message conversation was revealed by Kang Eun Ha herself. Jonghyun starts his message explaining that he messaged her because she might become the center of unwanted attention due to his action and that this was not his attention at all. He continued to say, “I support you. As a celebrity, as a minority of a different sort facing the public, I also feel disappointment towards the world that does not accept difference. Of course, it can’t be compared to what you feel.”
Jonghyun continues, “I support you who are rightly exclaiming that difference is not wrong. I do not think you need comfort or concern. You are that strong. I hope health and warm is with you for this end of the year.”
Kang Eun Ha gratefully replied back to Jonghyun with the message, “Thank you so much. I don’t know with what words I can express my feelings…Thank you. Thank you so much. I will definitely stay strong. Please be careful of cold, and I hope you have a warm end of the year ^^ Thank you!”
This poster written by Kang is part of an bigger project taking place all over Korea right now. College students (and more) come together to protest against privatization and censorship
All over Korea, people (mainly driven by college students) are holding protests and putting up handwritten posters against the privatization of railroads and health care. The theme of the protests are handwritten posters with the phrase “I am not okay” to drive home the point of society being censored and pressured into staying quiet/passive when asked questions like “How are you?”.
