SHINHWA have marked their comeback and their 20th anniversary with the release of their special album ‘Heart‘ and the title track ‘Kiss Me Like That’.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from a track with a name like ‘Kiss Me Like That‘ and given that we had already had a preview of the lyrics, I guess I was expecting a song that took it’s cue from the unrelenting tropical house genre that abounds in K-pop at the moment.
However, I was presently surprised by the calming, soothing acoustic driven track that SHINHWA have dropped. The song exudes an understated raw sensuality that is heightened by the unexpected addition of percussion and brass elements throughout the song.
You catch the vibe of this song right from the beginning, the song begins quietly and gently with just an acoustic guitar bringing the fluidity and vibrancy to life. It’s easy to expect the song to take off in another direction when you’re listening to it. However, the song stays true to itself, even the injections of Eric‘s English rap doesn’t pull the focus of the song too far off course. There is power in allowing a song to unfold and reveal itself without the need to inject ‘hype’ and moments of musical intensity. This song possesses tension and longing in its own measure, and that is where the true power lies.
SHINHWA have been around the industry long enough to not need to follow trends and do whatever everyone else is doing. ‘Kiss Me Like That‘ is the perfect example of this, a song that we weren’t truly expecting, but now realise we needed on our playlists!
The music video that accompanies the track, feels grand and sweeping, much like a vintage movie. It’s set on a luxurious cruise ship full of beautiful people doing beautiful things. The choreography for this track feels effortless and easy. The movements that define the lines ‘I love it when you kiss me like that‘ and ‘I love it how you touch me like that’, are an interpretive version of two lovers kissing and touching each other.
