SHINHWA released their fifth studio album ‘Perfect Man‘ in 2002, and it contained the title track of the same name. At the time the group were still signed to SM Entertainment.
The song ‘Perfect Man‘ was the perfect sound for this group at the time. It possessed (and still does) a down and dirty funk groove, and shines with the look and feel of the best of the 90’s boy bands coming out of the US. This song would not be out of place in NSYNC‘s playlist.
For the accompanying music video, each member portrays a different character while carrying a bouquet of yellow roses. We see Minwoo first carrying his bouquet as he dances his way down a crowded footpath when he turns into Dongwan who is riding an ATV. Dongwan turns into Andy who is a businessman entering a lift and changes into Jun Jin in a gym working out. Then it’s Hyesung‘s turn in a car. Then it turns into a performance video with Hyesung disappearing behind a door from which Eric emerges.
It was probably the height of production when it was released back in 2002, and certainly fits with the funky theme of the song. It also ranks right up there with other highly stylised video clips from that era.

‘Perfect Man‘ still sounds as good today as it did when it was first released. It’s such a great representation of everything that SHINHWA is (and was) and the direction that K-pop was heading in at the time.
SHINHWA is currently in the midst of celebrating their 20th anniversary and recently released their special album ‘Heart‘ and the title track ‘Kiss Me Like That’.
