On April 8th, Black Eyed Pilseung managed girl group, STAYC, made their first comeback since debut, releasing their MV to the title track, ‘ASAP’. This comes along with the simultaneously dropped 2nd mini album, ‘Staydom’. Check out the music video or the single down below!
Lyrically, the girls are looking for their perfect love match ASAP. Denying being picky, their friends tell them they are, describing their process to find a true, not fake heart. The 8-bit instrumental that beeps throughout the track hooks the song into a cool understated vibe to the pleasure of listeners. Paired with the brighter beat, the members fuller neutral vocal tones found from their debut, make for a nice contrast and give the tune balance. As the song drops into a piano led bridge, sweet voices fill a longing wishful soundscape before resuming the bubbly retro game-like refrain.
Watching the music video, the members find themselves in a bubbly game-like comic world. With punchy colours, the world includes a pink diary titled ‘Love & Story’, a huge claw machine and love heart pouring slushie machine. The MV further utilises various text effects appearing on-screen with words like ‘Pow!’ and ‘Cool’ written like paper mache or cartoon animations. Outfit wise, we see the sextet wearing cute but edgy attires. With cut together plaid and overall darker colours used in their main dance stage ensembles, the group once again find a happy medium of the bubblepop and darker concepts. Aside from that, the choreography features a catchy chorus with simple arm and leg movements as the group sharply dance to the retro beat.
Coming from High Up Entertainment, the group are managed by the founders of the producers for many K-Pop hits notably from girl group TWICE and recent title tracks from APINK. Combined with their talents, the 2020 rookies became the girl group with the highest sold debut release, with their 1st EP, ‘Star to a Young Culture’, featuring title track ‘So Bad’, receiving 34,000 copies. This latest effort is on track to beat that record as its first day sales reveal the group sold almost 13,000 albums, more than triple the comparable day sales from their debut.
STAYC’s 2nd mini album, ‘ASAP’, featuring the promoted single, ‘ASAP’, is available now. How do you feel about the girl group’s first comeback track and album? Let us know in the comments below!
