Stellar was at one point an adorable band of young singers with so much promise. Their last two songs “Marionette” and this current release “Mask” have reduced them to over-sexualized and under-talented robots. It is a shame really, their song “Study“, released just over a year ago, was very good, a little simplistic but good just the same. I am not sure what changed either within Stellar themselves or within their management team but this is pretty terrible stuff and it needs to change back.
I can give groups a lot of leeway with their concepts and releases. I understand that most of them have little to no control over what they do or say or wear or sing or dance. In the case of Stellar, it is getting to the point where it is becoming unforgivable and could easily cost the girls their career. Starting with the song itself, this is a massacre of good taste. Like “Marionette” (which was from the perspective of a woman used and jerked around unfeelingly by her former lover), “Mask” is an example of what not to do set to mediocre music. The song is about a woman that hides who she really is in order to find love. In what universe is this an accepted thing? Am I being too hard on the lyrics? Not even remotely:
“Loving you was my first sin
Hoping you’ll look at me was my second sin
I hoped that you at least knew my name
You didn’t know me, you didn’t look at me
You never even glanced at me
In the mask that was made how you wanted it
I am not there, it’s just a lie“
Now that we’ve gotten that part out of the way and I’m fairly sure you all can see where I’m coming from, let’s look at the video. Yes, we must. To be fair, I did watch it and I suppose you don’t really have to, unless you really want to. I can just give you the “highlights” if you feel that you just can’t.
“Marionette” was a mess of unneeded innuendo, fan-service, terrible costumes and awkward butt-rubbing choreography. “Mask” is no better, sadly. While there is no terrible butt-rubbing happening, there’s awkward shaking and some really over-the-top and not even remotely needed fan-service around the 1:34 mark. The costuming had potential but a lot of it was too sexy for a video that really couldn’t support it. Seriously, who wears a black leotard/bathing suit in a blanket tent in what could be a parking lot? Evidently someone in charge of Stellar’s styling does, though I’m positive they’re the only one on the planet.
It is important, at this point, for me to make it very clear, I do not blame Stellar for this. They are just doing their jobs and frankly, I feel bad for them since their jobs suck so universally right now. I think serious thought should be put in to finding them better management before their reputations are so irrevocably tarnished that they are unable to work and perform ever again.
If you’d like to watch the video, you can do so below. What do you think about this? Do you think that this sort of image is fair? What about other less sexy concepts that are just as poorly thought out? I’m sure everyone can come up with a time when one of their favorites was dressed or styled in a less than perfect way.
