On August 6th, veteran soloist and former WONDER GIRLS member SUNMI released the music video to her newest title track, ‘You Can’t Sit With Us’. The track comes hot off her 3rd mini album, ‘1/6’. What makes this even more special is that this EP marks her first in 3 years. Having released digital singles or single albums (February’s ‘Tail’) since then, fans are ecstatic to have more than 1 track (6 in fact) to listen to.
Lyrically, the song treads on the line of hating someone and claiming they figuratively can’t sit with them. The synth heavy track fits right in line with the singer’s signature musical style, coined as ‘Sunmi-pop’. Teaming up with different songwriters from usual, this collaboration with Melanie Fontana, Michel Schultz and Ross Goulan (the former two contributing towards K-Pop hits such as TWICE‘s ‘I Can’t Stop Me’ and CLC‘s ‘Helicopter’) worked well adding another solid title track to the artist’s developed discography. With strong melodic lines, the songstress surprises everyone with an all English second verse rap. It acts as a break to the otherwise retro dreamy soundscape of the track.

SUNMI ‘YOU CAN’T SIT WITH US’ MV:
Watching the MV, we see the ‘Gashina’ singer sitting in her pink bedroom filing her nails. Receiving various phone calls, she stares annoyed at the phone’s ringing. Begrudgingly answering, she hangs up to see her lover outside her window. Holding up a sign saying ‘Forgive me’, she throws a variety of objects out the window, however in the process killing the man outside. Fast forward to a DVD rental store, we see the artist hanging out with a couple of friends. Late at night, it doesn’t take long for a wave of zombies to start walking towards them, led by the now zombified lover. Becoming badass, they pick up their weapons and shoot down the zombies; (fun fact, the singer trained for the action scenes with actors from Korean dramas/movies such as ‘Kingdom’ an ‘Train to Busan’).
With the lover remaining, she walks towards him, but in the a turn of events he pulls out an engagement ring to which she lovingly accepts. The video ends with the two hugging as shooters surround and aim their guns towards them in the distance.
Apart from this release, the 29 year old is currently a mentor on Mnet‘s new idol survival show, ‘Girls Planet 999’ which started airing on August 6th. From a selection of 99 girls, the aim is to create a 9-member girl group under the voting of fans and assistance from the mentors.
