T-ara N4 recently made their sub-unit debut with “Countryside Life” by revealing a drama and a dance music video. However, while being met with positive reviews for the song, their drama version of the music video has received backlash for having posters that looked similar to the Rising Sun flag.
In the drama version of the MV, there is a poster advertising a dance competition, which has a disco ball and 16 rays shooting out from it —quite similar to the red circle with 16 rays on the Rising Sun flag. Later in the music video, the girls have a dance scene in front of a big banner with the same symbol.
Why is this raising concerns and receiving backlash?
Many Asian countries, especially China and Korea, are offended by this flag as it was the symbol of the Imperial Japanese Army up until the end of World War II. Many Koreans are sensitive to seeing illustrations similar to it, as they or their ancestors have experienced seeing the flag back when the Japanese occupied Korea.
However, some are responding to the criticism, saying that some are taking things too seriously.
T-ara N4 aren’t the only one experiencing such criticism, as around a week ago, English rock band Muse featured the Rising Sun Flag in their “Panic Station” music video, receiving the same responses. The rock band eventually apologized and revealed a new MV.
How do you think T-ara N4 will respond to this?
