Roo’ra stands for ‘Roots of Reggae,’ and were a Korean hip-hop group that debuted in 1994 with their debut album, “Roots of Reggae,” and released the music video for “100일째 만남.”
The original line up of Roo’ra consisted of members Lee Sangmin, Go Young Ok, Kim Ji Hyun and Shin Jung Hwan. In 1995, Jung Hwan left for mandatory military service. Even though he appeared with the group later that year and in 1997, although he never participated on any other albums past the year 1994 and was replaced by Chae Ri Na.
In 1995, they released their second album, “날개잃은천사,” as well as the music video for “안녕.” They also released the album, “Reincarnation of the Legend” later that year.
In 1996, Ji Hyun left to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Michael Romeo. That year they released two albums, “All Systems Go,” which contained the single, “3! 4!” and “Pops & Party.”
The group disbanded the next year, but not before releasing the album, “The Final,” which contains the song, “The Lover” as well as the compilation album, “Best of Roo’ra.”
They reformed in 1999 with Ji Hyun, Sangmin Yong Ok and Ri Na. They released the album “Six n’ Six” that year, which contained the song, “Moving” (a personal favorite of mine) and followed it up the next year with “풍변기곡” in 2000.
The group disbanded once again in 2001 after the release of their album, “Best and Last.” After the disbandment in 2001, members Jung Hwan and Young Ok made a sub-group, Roo’ra Men several years later in 2008 and released the single, “The Reason Why I Hate Winter,” which was produced by Sangmin.
Roo’ra made yet another comeback in 2009 with their (so far) final album, “A9ain,” which contains the track, “Going Going.” This seemed to be their final comeback, and they have not had any group activities since.
If you love Roo’ra as much as I do, be sure to pick up their album, “A9ain” on iTunes!
