In a polling survey between Yoo Ki Hong of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Sejong School Foundation, 604 foreign students were asked to choose the idol groups that caught their attention and awareness of the Korean culture.
The results are, Big Bang (18.3%), Girls’ Generation, (15.1%), Super Junior (13.9%), EXO (11.1%), TVXQ (8.3%), 2NE1 (7.6%), CNBLUE (6.8%), 2PM (6.4%) and Shinhwa (5.8%).
66.1% of the students studying at the Sejong foundation shared that they learned about Korea through pop culture, such as its music, dramas, and movies. 12.0% revealed that it was from politics, economy, and diplomacy covered on the news.
80.2% of the Asian respondents learned through pop culture, but only 56.2% of the North and South American respondents and 56.4% of the European participants contacted Korean culture through its pop media.
41.1% of the participants shared that they like Korean pop culture because it has “A unique individuality only Korean pop culture has.” They found K-pop most interesting, then dramas, and finally its movies.
