UNIQ has burst in to the K-Pop scene with an amazing and exciting debut single, “Falling In Love!” Fans were a bit shocked at first to hear about the group, since they were trained by YG and no one had heard of them before. However, as the time of their debut got closer, it became clear that they were going to make quite an impression. They have worked hard the last few weeks to get people excited for their debut, including dropping individual teasers for the members. Now that the full video is out, it is easy to say that the group lives up to its name.
The song is unlike any other recent release and that honestly surprised me. Often boy-bands have a formulaic approach to their debuts and releases, so hearing this really got me excited about the group. There is a cheerful and happy sound to the song without sounding overly sweet or fake. The choreography is good as well, just difficult enough to show that they are good dancers, but not so difficult that it was distracting.
UNIQ did not receive as much pre-debut hype as other groups, and I think that is actually so much better. For the last few years, groups have been excessively promoted prior to their debut which makes expectations for their debut incredibly high. While it could be said that it helps the group out by setting up their fan base so they have a better chance at success, I feel like it really does not help them out in the long run. When a group is allowed to debut in a less forced, less exploitative manner, they are able to grow and change as they need to, without being under the extreme pressure that obsessive fans can put on a group. In the case of UNIQ, they can be judged and appreciated for what they are, (a very talented group of good-looking boys) as opposed to having to live up to the fans idea of what they should be.
