SM Entertainment, Kris, and Luhan are living proof that out a few good things trouble is sure to follow. Luhan’s legal team has broken their silence after SM Entertainment made the decision to take legal action against not just Luhan and Kris but also a chunk of China’s entertainment agencies and brands that have hired the pair int he months since they individually filed for contract nullification.
On February 5th, Sohu released an exclusive interview with his legal representative, they responded to the sudden attack stating, “SM Entertainment pressed legal charges and issued a statement, but we only found out through reports. Both sides showed willingness to negotiate during the proceedings in Korean court, but the sudden development of this event surprised us. We don’t know the full details with regards to the statement that entered into Shanghai court, but if it has anything to do with the exclusive contract, the jurisdiction is in Korea not Shanghai. The court case we began in Korea is also about the nullification of said contract. We will be issuing an official statement and try to find out more about SM’s statment as well.” Yet when Tv Report approached one of Luhan’s officials, they refused to comment, “We are not doing interviews with regards to Luhan at the moment, I don’t know about any interview with a Chinese media.”
On February 6th, the two legal teams met to negotiate a resolution at Seoul’s courts, the third such mediation appointment, and, like the ones before it, it was unsuccessful. One representative said, “We are trying to negotiate terms to come to an agreement with SM. We will keep trying to come to an agreement with SM.” Kris and his side have yet to release a statement.
This maybe SM’s first time that they are clearly in the right. This does not appear to be about money, this has the appearance of being more about pride and ethics. It has also been speculated that it is also emotionally driven, particularly when the tone of their statement is taken in to account. SM seems feels as though Kris and Luhan have betrayed them with abruptly leaving and then out of the blue they have all these projects and it appears that they’re thinking “We turned these “nobodies” into stars and now they’re slapping us in the face with all these promotions in China and the Chinese market is enabling them” so now they are out for blood. SM Entertainment like any other company doesn’t want legal problems but they certainly are not going to let Luhan and Kris walk away and get what they want which is clearly to sever all ties with the company. Over all SM Entertainment, is sending a clear message to their current and future artists with the way they are handling these proceedings: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
