Vixens of K-Pop Part 1: Soloists

Every time I tune into YouTube, there is one girl group/soloist or another doing one of varying concepts. But what I’ve realized since last year and this year, is that the latest trend to overtake K-Pop, is the ‘sexy’ concept.

Some have rocked it some have failed, and we have all cringed but one thing is clear, that women are shat upon for this, and men are glorified as ‘sex gods,’ while women are thrown to the sides as ‘sluts’ and ‘hoes.’

What I’d like to shine a light upon, are the proud women of K-Pop who held their heads high as they portrayed not only themselves, but women overall as sexy and confident individuals.

Part one covers solo artists who have done so.

1. Lee Hyori

Probably the most well known solo artist for sexy concepts, the ex-FinK.L member debuted with the sexy concept in 2003 and has flaunted it ever since.

2. Chae Yeon

Actually began her singing career in Japan as ‘Jinny‘ when she debuted in 2001 in the group, Brand New Biscuits. After several years in Japan, switching groups and going solo, she finally returned to Korea and debuted under the name Chae Yeon.

At first, she was ‘just another sexy concept’ but her career heightened with the release of “Two of Us” and constantly appearing on variety shows.

3. IVY

If you haven’t heard of IVY, you’ve been living under a rock. The ex-JYP trainee debuted with mature sexy concept, “What Happened Tonight” and the sexy spilled over into her second single, “A-ha!”

4. HyunA

Yes, HyunA too carries the sexy concept, and for some reason, with so much stigma. But why? She can pull off cute-sexy as well as mature-sexy, as seen in her debut single, “Change.”

5. Ga In

Ga In’s group BEG has a more mature concept overall, which makes the sexy easier to digest for a lot of fans. So when she released “Bloom,” it may have shocked many fans visually, but conceptually, it made sense.

6. Hyorin

A sexy soloist from a sexy group, SISTAR member Hyorin is very familiar with the sexy concept, as that’s the trademark concept for SISTAR as well as the sub-unit she participates in, SISTAR19.
