No award show is really complete without jaw dropping performances by the top names in the business. The 25th Annual Seoul Music Awards was no different and did not fail to disappoint in production. Groups like SHINee, VIXX, EXO, Monsta X, MFBTY, Seventeen, Apink, BTOB, Sistar, EXID, Red Velvet, GFriend and iKON performed outstanding numbers while TaeYeon, San E, Hong JinYoung, Jang JaeIn, Ailee, and BoA added to the excitement with their solo stages.
Some of the performances that stood out can be found below:
Monsta X took home the Dance Performance Award this year and we can clearly see why with the stage they put on. This year has been amazing for the seven rookies with Starship Entertainment, as they not only debuted but had two successful comebacks. At this moment, I.M is still recovering from his surgery he had last month, and was not able to participate but you can catch him on their new reality show ‘Right Now!’.
Taking 2015 by surprise, GFriend gained much popularity with their latest release ‘Me Gustas Tu’. Their hard work paid off when they were the only female group to win the Newcomers Award this year. GFriend brought the cuteness to the stage with their powerful and playful performance.
Though a simplistic stage, Jang JaeIn performed with WonWoo of Seventeen for their rendition of ‘Auditory Hallucination’ from the drama ‘Kill Me Heal Me’. In other award shows, ‘Kill Me Heal Me’ won numerous awards for their acting and concept, so it seems quite right that JaeIn would win the OST Award with its theme song.
Winning the Daesang Award for the third time in a row, along with a Bonsang and the Korean Wave Special Award, EXO performed their two of their comeback songs as eight members. Lay is still in China working on his individual projects so he was not present. The eight other members were energetic and you could feel their presence in the building.
With one of the most interesting stage productions of the evening, EXID brought the temperature up at the Seoul Music Awards with their ‘Hot Pink’. Joined by Julian Kang as the DJ and various dancers, you can gather why EXID was presented with a Bonsang Awards for their outstanding work in 2015.
Fifteen years since her debut, BoA swept in at the SMAs and was gifted with the Best Album Award for ‘Kiss My Lips’. She performed ‘The Shadow’ with an entourage of male dancers before ending her number on a softer note. Cutely, TaeYeon of SNSD and Ailee can be seen supporting the original queen of the Hallyu Wave during her performance.
Being on of the hottest rookie groups to debut in 2015, Seventeen with Pledis Entertainment took the stage with a sense of presence only the thirteen members know how to emit. Winning their first award ever with a Newcomers Award, they performed their debut song ‘Adore U’ along with ‘Rock’ originally performed by the Performance Team from the ‘Boys Be’ album.
Performing their latest comeback song ‘Chained Up’, VIXX took the SMA stage by storm with their sexy concept. Donned in pink blouses and tight high-waisted pants with leather accessories, the six members with Jellyfish Entertainment did not fail to disappoint with the help of NaNa School dancers at the SMAs. They also took home their third Bonsang.
Coming back from their North American tour Pink Memory, Apink started their song with a dance introduction by Bomi and Naeun. Lightening up the crowd with their summer hit, ‘Remember’, Apink looked angelic and soft in all white. Grabbing a Bonsang Award, they added to the excitement of the evening.
BTOB brought a more mellow feeling to the award show with ‘괜찮아요’. The seven men were casually cool as they performed their intricate choreography and sang with powerful vocals. The group is in the middle of preparations for their fourth Japanese single, ‘Dear Bride’, which will come out in February.
I wish I could write about all the performances because each one was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed them all. You can catch all the whole awards show on Dramafever so you may enjoy them as well without clicking through different videos. I want to congratulate everyone for an amazing year in Korean music and can’t wait to see what 2016 brings. Which performance was your favourite? We want to know!
