YG Entertainment is known for creating unique groups. Though many trainees who have passed through YG’s doors train like most idol trainees, YG is known for their musically creative groups and crazy concepts like we have seen with PSY, 2NE1 and Big Bang.
Winner is no different and followed in the footsteps of their mentors with continuing to break the mold. The one thing Winner will admit is they recognise that as different as they are, they are still an idol group. Unlike the groups that follow concepts decided by their agencies and execute extensive choreography, YG groups compose, write and produce their own music without limiting themselves to a specific genre, rookies included.
On February 2, the five men of Winner sat down with reporters at a roundtable to discuss their comeback after a year and seven months with ‘EXIT:E’. When a reporter stated, “Winner is an idol group, but you seem to have a lot of strengths that you don′t usually see in other idol groups,” leader Seungyoon replied with, “But that doesn′t mean we′re not an idol group. The fact is we can′t be in denial of the fact that we′re idols. However, we′d like to be judged not as idols but singers.“
Chiming in after, Mino said, “I know that idols aren′t seen in a good light. There are so many idol groups these days, and I think a negative view of idols is impossible to avoid. But even so, we don′t want to deny the fact that we′re idols. But because we′re confident in our music, we′re not obsessed with being assessed as idols or artists. Whatever the assessment may be, if they view our music and performances positively, that′s enough for us.“
“We often hear that we don′t seem like idols even though we′re idols. However, if we make music after creating a mold, be it an idol or artist, you can′t create anything. We don′t want to be tied up like that. Whether we′re idols or artists, we′re thankful if you listen and enjoy our music.“, Taehyun added.
Mino, Seungyoon, Taehyun, Seunghoon, and Jinwoo won the chance to debut as Winner through ‘WIN: Who Is Next’ in 2014 and found much success with their debut album as Best New Artist of the Year on various end-of-year shows. They also garnered a lot of acknowledgement as talented composers, songwriters and producers, and the group received recognition as a group unlike other idol groups and racked in the music show awards as well.
After much time out of the spotlight, Winner released their first comeback mini album, ‘EXIT:E’, keeping their unique style in everything they do. It’s refreshing to know that even though they do things a bit differently than the groups around them, they do not deny that they don’t carry a similarity with them.
