On February 22nd, the 6th annual Gaon Chart Music Awards were held at the Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul.The awards show created in 2010, by the Korea Music Content Industry Association aims to create Billboard–like tracking systems for musical releases that are based on sales and streaming. The annual show brought out some of the biggest names in Korean entertainment and awarded some of the best selling artists in the country. The show was hosted by Super Junior’s Leetuk and MAMAMOO’s Solar.
The awards ceremony this year gave out 12 awards for the digital music sector and 4 for the offline music section. The Gaon Chart compiles more than 97% of an average, 20 million, monthly users of paid music service. It lists pop music rankings from 1st to 100th place on a weekly basis. This chart is the only one in Korea that is a comprehensive chart of sales volume.
Boy groups dominated the album sales, while girl groups and ballad singers topped the charts for digital sales and streaming.
