It’s another sad day for the K-Pop industry as Wonder Girls‘ Sun (Sunye) has officially announced her retirement from the entertainment industry and from her group.
Wonder Girls debuted in 2007 under JYP Entertainment with the single “Irony“. They quickly build up a succesful career with amazing songs such as “Tell me“, “So Hot“, “Nobody“, “2 Different Tears” and “Be My Baby“. Their last comeback happened in 2012 with the single “Like This“.
After some formation changes, they satyed as a five-member girlgroup formed by Sun (Sunye), Yenny (Yeeun), Lim (Hyerim), Yubin and Sohee. However, the formation seemed threatened in 2013, when Sun announced, a few months after her marriage, that she was pregnant.
Despite the pregnancy, nothing related to a break-up was released, and the girls continued in a hiatus. When, a few months after the birth of her daughter, Sun announced that she wanted to spend a long time in Haiti doing missionary work and JYP Entertainment agreed with her decision going so far as to assure fans that Wonder Girls hadn’t come to an end.
However, the disbandment seemed unstoppable since Sohee had already decided not to renew her contract and had already signed with BH Entertainment to focus on her acting career. The rumors only rose again when Yenny debuted solo as HA:TFELT earlier this year.
On December 10th, Sun finally announced her retirement from the group, leaving many fans in tears. In a shocking interview, she said, “Return to the entertainment industry? That won’t ever happen!”.
In this interview, Sun revealed to be very religious and has attended to church since she was young. She said that in 2009, when they were promoting in New York, she finally met with Jesus in a personal level.
According to her, “I believed in God ever since I was young when I went to Church with my grandmother, but I hadn’t truly met Jesus on a deep personal level. When I came to U.S.A I had time to myself for the first time since debut and I went to Church every morning for early morning prayer to fill the emptiness in me. This is when I realized that the words in the Bible was alive. Even when I reached the top as a singer, I couldn’t fill the emptiness in me, but after I met Christ, my life changed. I realized the “Original Sin” is in living my life for myself and not for Jesus.”
She ended by saying “I enjoyed my life as a singer but I wish to be loved with in Jesus as a daughter and share that love. I plan to seek what is eternal and spend my life spreading the word of God.”
Since Sun had renewed her contract earlier this year, it’s difficult to tell what will happen now. JYP Entertainment stated that, “Sun still is under contract. What she said has not been agreed on by the company, and we have no statement at this time.”
Some fans said that Sun’s statement was unprofessional since she hadn’t talked to the company about it before, and that she sounded like a completely different person, saying that she will give up on music after seven years because “she found Jesus”. She probably should have chosen her words better, because such a shocking announcement will probably hurt the fans, who have been waiting patiently for a comeback for two years. There have been reports as this has developed that seem to say that there has been a mistake in translating the content of the interview, though no one from either side has commented on this.
What will happen now? Will Sun really leave the entertainment industry? Will Wonder Girls continue as a three-member group, or will one of the biggest girl-groups from Korea meet its end?
