I know it’s a weird adjective for a song coming from a hip hop label, but this song truly does have a bouncy, joyous feel to it, and then again Amoeba Culture is not known for doing what everyone else is doing. “Cheers” is attributed to the label mates Gaeko (of Dynamic Duo fame) and Yankie, and features vocals from Babylon and an extra rap verse from TS Entertainment’s Beenzino.
The guitar, rhythm and overall styling remind me of the song “Burn My Dread” from the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 OST, which is pretty much the best compliment I can personally give the song. Even the way the song title and the artist’s names are presented mimic the shape changing in the opening for the video game. I admire the Persona 3 OST for its unusual styling and willingness to combine genres, and I really feel like this track does exactly the same thing. Babylon’s singing sounds as smooth as butter when he slides through the melody, and the flow is excellent from all the rappers, especially Yankie who comes out first. Beenzino does an excellent job with rhyming, even if it does get slightly repetitive. And of course, Gaeko knocks it out of the park with his lyricism, so much so that it makes the better than average lyricism from the other two look slightly stale. The fact that Yankie and Beenzino can sound good on the same track as Gaeko is enough laud.
Babylon also lends his dancing skills to the video at the second and third chorus. The dance isn’t the cleanest thing, but it wouldn’t fit the style of the song if it was perfect. The styling and shooting of the music video are also not stellar, but they feel like they’re organic, like the clothes and video just grew out of the song. That matters more than good lighting, quality cameras and fashion; the stars fit the clothes and their surroundings.
The only complaint I have is the cowbell’s volume. There’s a double tap about every 3 seconds, or about every 2 bars, and it’s louder than I would like. The good thing is that I’ve played this song so many times that my brain pretends that it’s not even there. Now, if you excuse me, I’m going to share this with literally everyone I know.
