Now, the winners of the 2014 KMusic Award for Group Of The Year Male and Female. Like many of the categories this year there were no easy and clear winner. In the end there can only be one winner in each category.
Congratulations to this year’s winners AOA and JYJ
Both as individuals and as a group, the guys of JYJ have had a very interesting year. From sold-out concerts, to the ever-present controversies, and awards, it seemed these guys were everywhere. The internet began to buzz when the news broke that JYJ would be releasing a comeback this year. Jaejoong, Yoochan , and Junsu were busy with their various solo projects and as often happens, it had been awhile since the fans had heard from the group. July 21st the official teaser for their comeback was dropped and in a mere 37 seconds, fans around the word and the KMusic writers were talking, but we all knew it was going to be a long 7 days before the full length music video came out. The guys had said the new album and single were going to be more mature and sexy all, man was that was true! In my opinion and the opinion of several staff members, they pulled off the concept incredibly well. JYJ seems to be one of those groups that thrive in difficult situation which is very good since later in the year in was time for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and that dredged up some drama. JYJ had been the honorary ambassadors and even did a “music video” for the games. So when the line up for the opening and closing acts was released JYJ was not on the list but groups that belong to a certain company were on the list. That story is too long to go into here but you can read about it here. For showing that no matter how steep the climb is, you can do it if you stick to who you are and for giving us a fantastic album, JYJ is the Male group of the year.
Backseat
AOA is one of those groups who never seem to give up and that is a good thing. In the world of K-Pop female groups, the popularity dynamic is uneven while the same half a dozen groups enjoy the most of the popularity and remaining groups fight to remain relevant in a category with a very high turn-over rate. Since the group’s debut, AOA has been one of those groups fighting to stay in the game; they had a very loyal fan base but just could to get the same attention as some of the more popular groups. Part of that is due to the fact they do belong to a smaller entertainment company so there was not really the funds needed to put them out there all over the web and social media like a larger company. But AOA has one thing going for them talent; am I saying they are more talented than some of the “super groups?” The answer is yes they are. AOA started off 2014 a big way with their song Mini Skirt finally the world began to take notice, then in May they released a mini album Short Hair . To top off a successful year, AOA released Like A Cat and their popularity exploded. Their diligence and talent made them our only logical choice for Female Group of the Year.
