Welcome to part 2 review of the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards aka MAMA‘s, incase you missed it you can check out the red carpet performances here the you can read part 1 review here.
This next section is called “Four Shades Of Love.” The next performance was Soyou (Sistar) and Junggigo performing their duet “Some.” It was nice they smiled at each other all while sitting on a park bench in the middle of the stage. Vocally they were both spot on no complaints to be made, but both of them are excellent live. Then Bora and P.O (Block B) did a section in a hip hop style. The next couple up was Nam Joohyuk and Dasom would slowed things back down with their rendition. Last but not least Hyorin and Nam Joohyuk would perform a jazzed up section of the same song.
The ladies of Sistar would come together and perform “Touch My Body.” There is not much to say about their performance if you have seen them do the song live any other time then you have seen this performance . Not that it was bad, just not memorable really. All in all the audience was having a good time and that is the important thing to come out of all of this.
The next performance is one that fans have been going on about ever since pitted as the “Fight Of the Century” is was label a battle between BTS and Block B. To say the fans were excited would be an understatement. The “battle” began with the dancers from both groups showing their stuff in the middle of the stage. Then came the rap battle aka “leader battle” Block B’s Zico VS BTS’ Rap Monster. Zico preformed his recent solo “Tough Cookie” while Rap Monster performed and original song “RM.”
Oh but wait there is more. Then groups then got back together BTS preformed BTS performed “Danger” while Block B performed “Her.”
It all ended when both groups joined together and covered “Let’s Get It Started” originally done by The Black Eyed Peas. At the end of the day I can not tell you who won, but I am sure if you asked the fans they would have an answer for you. In my personal opinion it comes down to what you like while both groups fill a niche in K-Pop their styles have enough differences, you can be a fan of one or both of the groups.
“Infinite Spectrum”
Infinite took the stage next showing their perfect dance skills like always. Performing live with that insane choreography must be really tough, but they slayed it, they really deserved that prize for the best dance performance. Infinite entered the stage with “Last Romeo” and finished it with “Back”. They guys did not disappoint at all. Opening with solo dance routines from Hoya, Dongwoo , to say that they were awesome is an understatement. Then the rest of the members showed up and well they showed the world why they are hands down one of the best groups in K-Pop.
“Music Makes One“(which is the motto of the 2014 MAMA’s) was the next section, it began with a video message from actor Forest Whitaker. Who is the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) special envoy for peace and reconciliation. They are working with CJ E&M to use the power of music to bridge the gaps between people, cultural, and across borders. They are working together to bring education to girls around the world, if you want to know more this amazing cause you can read about it here.
Then actress and singer Yoo Eunhye (Baby V.O.X , “Princess Hours“, and “Coffee Prince“) along with singer Lee Sungchul (Boohwal ) preformed “The Day” with a full chorus.
The next artist really does not need an introduction but just in case you really needs some help, SeoTaiji and IU preformed “SOGYEOKDONG“. Then SeoTaiji preformed “Christmalo.win.” Lastly he preformed “Come Back Home” featuring Vasco and Zico (Block B). By the end of the set there was not a non fan left in the building. Every time the camera showed the audience people were dancing , clapping and singing along.
“The New Age of EXO” as you guessed it EXO took to the stage. They had one of the coolest opening of the show preforming “Black Pearl” then “Tell Me What Is Love.” We show a dance routine by Kai and wrapping the set up with “Overdoes.” Then the screen played a video that ended with the message EXO 2015 Coming Soon, giving the fans a cryptic tease of what to come in the new year.
The last set titled “Colorize” was next with 2/5 of Big Bang G Dragon and Taeyang. First Taeyang preformed Eye, Nose, Lips. G Dragon then joined Taeyang as they preformed “Good Boy.” They preformed “Fantastic Baby” lastly, well kind they played the song and they sang along with the chorus, but never the less the shows performance ended on a high note.
So that was the 2014 MAMA Awards. Some final thoughts for me, if I was going to give out an awards Ailee would win Fan Girl Award, while EXO’s Chanyeol would win Fan Boy Award . I like seeing these idols having as much fun as we do while watching the awards take place, they are people after all. You can check out a list of the winners for the night here and learn more about who wore what on the red carpet here.
