The weekend of the 9th annual Korean Film Festival in Australia in Melbourne finished with a screening of ‘The Vanished‘. We are now halfway through KOFFIA 2018.
Director: Lee Chang-hee
Cast: Kim Sang-kyung, Kim Kang-woo, Kim Hee-ae
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Synopsis:
On a dark and stormy night, a watchman on late shift at Korea’s National Forensics Laboratory discovers that a body has up and vanished from the morgue, after chasing him around. The police sent to investigate the matter are led by Detective Woo, who seems to have a haunted past himself. The missing body is that of Yoon-seol, a powerful and wealthy businesswoman who died of a heart attack. Detective Woo’s attention is immediately piqued by the woman’s widower, the much younger, handsome Jin-han. It seems Jin-han, a bio-med researcher whose work was never taken seriously by the domineering Yoon-seol, was a trophy husband. Unfolding over the course of one night, predominantly in one location, The Vanished channels the spirit of Alfred Hitchcock and a dash of Euro noir for a psychological thriller that delivers.

Review:
I certainly did not expect ‘The Vanished‘ to leave me shocked after watching it. The plot and storyline of this movie is written so well. What initially started as a simple mystery soon becomes really connected with the rest of the characters. The intricacy of the case relates all the main characters, which definitely makes for an interesting case. As more and more details were being discovered, I was literally on the edge of my seat from the suspense and thrill of the movie. All the questions I had while watching this movie were answered by the end, and I have to admire the writers of this film as it is so well-thought out.
‘The Vanished‘ even has a few humorous moments. The chief detective and his team are not so serious all the time. Their lighthearted jokes are refreshing from the chaos that unravels in the case that they are dealing with. There are also some scary, gruesome and creepy moments that feature the main suspect of the case. The shocking ending with a twist will make the audience ponder over it long after the movie has ended. This movie teaches a good lesson about karma and revenge.
