With the reports about Jessica‘s departure from Girls’ Generation people started to discuss the so-called ‘Second Generation Girl Group Curse’ that seems to reach the most prominent girl groups in K-Pop.
The curse’s first victims were KARA and Wonder Girls which have debuted in the same year as Girls’ Generation. KARA’s original squad that consisted of four member have already gone through two changes. Kim Sung Hee, KARA’s lead singer, left the group only one year after debut and was replaced by two new members – Hara and Jiyoung. When the members’ contracts with their agency expired this year, Nicole and Jiyoung decided to leave the group which led DSP Media to hold an audition program to find a new member – Youngji.
Wonder Girls have also experienced major member changes with HyunA leaving the group soon after their debut. She was replaced by Yubin and the group’s squad remained the same for almost three years. The next big change came in 2010 when Sunmi decided to go her own way and was replaced by Hyerim. Six years after the group’s debut, leader Sunye got married and decided to take a hiatus in order to focus on her newlywed life. Sohee on the other hand did not renew her contract with JYP Entertainment and changed agencies to pursue an acting career.
What differentiates the case of Girls’ Generation from KARA and Wonder Girls is the fact that during their seven-year-long career, they have never had any changes in their squad, which led fans to feel that they were beyond the reach of this phenomenon. Also, unlike the other two groups, this Girls’ Generation announcement came as a total surprise with no hints bat all about the tension among members and what was going on within the group.
Do you think the ‘Second Generation Girl Group Curse’ exist?
