Officially KMusic would like to wish Girls’ Generation (소녀시대) a very happy 9th anniversary!
They started out as a 9 member group in 2007; with Jessica leaving in 2014 to peruse her solo carrier. The current member line is: Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun.
When they debuted in 2007 they weren’t as popular as they are now. It wasn’t into 2009 when they came out with Gee that they rose to popularity.
In 2011 they signed with EMI Records in Japan and came out with their self titled Japanese album and became the first album by a non-Japanese girl group to sell over a million copies.
They are also the first Korean girl group to top over 100 million views on 4 ouf their songs: “Gee”, “I Got a Boy”, “The Boys”, and “Mr. Taxi”.
Their name in Korean means: So-nyuh Shi-dae (소녀시대) and in China and Japan, it is nearly the same. In China their name means: Shàonǚ Shídài (少女时代) and in Japan it means, Shōjo Jidai (少女時代), all of which roughly translates to “Generation of Girls.”
Another interesting fact, Tiffany’s true name is Stephanie, while the others, Jessica included, go by their names. Jessica and Tiffany are the only ones not from South Korea; they are both Korean-Americans.
Stay tuned with Officially KMusic because we bring you all the latest news from Korean Entertainment!
