After a year’s departure, Korean heartthrob Lee Seung Gi is back in Singapore for a fan meeting and mini-concert ‘The Brilliant Show’.
The multi-talented solo artist shared about his upcoming variety show, his imperfections and his fear of ghosts during the press conference on Sept 6th at the Bugis+ Atrium in Singapore.
Starting out as a singer, and soon becoming a celebrated actor and host for various popular variety shows such as ‘Strong Heart’, Lee Seung Gi has stolen many hearts with his singing, wit and warm personality. Apart from releasing a successful mini-album ‘Forest’ last year and a debut Japanese album ‘Time for Love’, his recent drama ‘Gu Family Book’, where he collaborated with Suzy (of Miss A) was also a big hit with record high viewership.
Roars of cheering greeted Lee Seung Gi as he made his way on stage. In English, he called out, “Hello Singapore! This is my second time here and I am so excited to be here once again. I have always wanted to come back to Singapore. Thank you for inviting!”
Lee Seung Gi’s charisma attracted a huge crowd of fans. Many Airens hailed from beyond the shores – Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand and Japan – to catch a glimpse of him and to support their beloved idol. Compared to the last visit, Lee Seung Gi jokingly said that he seemed to be having more fans this time round. To his very passionate Philippines Airens who were calling out to him, Lee Seung Gi said “Mahakita!” – the ‘I love you’ equivalent in Tagalog!
The 26 year-old will be in town for a 1-night-2-day schedule, akin to his hit variety show ‘1N2D’. In fact, Lee Seung Gi shared that he will work alongside his ‘1N2D’ producer, Na Young Suk, once again when he returns to the variety scene with ‘Backpacking Project 2’ coming in November this year. Lee Seung Gi said, “There is this ‘Grandpas over Flowers’ show that is quite popular in Korea now, and the format of ‘Backpacking Project 2’ will be similar to that.” Well, the difference is that instead of older actors, he will be hitting the roads with actresses who won’t necessarily be of grandma-age!
As an all-rounded artist who wears many hats, how does he juggle his time as an actor, a singer as well as a host? A thoughtful Lee Seung Gi said, “It is difficult. Primarily, I am a singer, so I wanted to focus on my singing. But frankly now, I hope to do all three!” Among the three, Lee Seung Gi shared, “I won’t say I particularly like just one aspect. I tend to focus on the one I am doing at the moment, and that would be the one I enjoy (during that period) and I do my best.”
Being casted for ‘My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox’ and the recent ‘Gu Family Book’, Lee Seung Gi was asked if he has special likings for these mystic animals and spiritual beings. “Frankly I am very scared of ghosts,” he said sheepishly, “but coincidentally I am involved in these dramas with gumihos (nine-tailed foxes according to Korean folklores). Of course, since I know the storylines, I am not as afraid. In fact, Gu Family Book is a very unique fantasy story, which pulled me to the drama.”
Voted as the best travel mate, what is the number one priority to Lee Seung Gi when he is going out of town? Well, Airens would know -it’s none other than eating! Lee Seung Gi shared that he would research about the best food of the destination to make sure he doesn’t miss a crumb of the must-try delicacies.
Also voted as the number one husband material, fans are probably curious what good husband qualities does Lee Seung Gi possess and when does he plan to tie the knot – “I haven’t prepared much for this aspect!” he continued, laughing, “but I think a good husband is one who thinks for the family first, and really caring for the family…”
So for such a perfect man, does he have any imperfections? Thinking hard, Lee Seung Gi said, “I tend to take care of my new belongings a little too much! But after a while, perhaps a month or so, it becomes one of my old items. Looking back, I probably lack some patience.”
Being in the industry for 10 years, Lee Seung Gi was asked if he is afraid to change his good image built up over the decade, and if he willing to do alternative roles in the future, to which he responded, “I do not have any fear at all to change my image if opportunities arise. I like to explore roles that I can portray well.”
Some fans are said to be ‘jealous’ of the Japanese fans, whom Lee Seung Gi had visited three times this year -garnering waves of ‘ohhhhs’ amidst giggles from the crowd. In defence, Lee Seung Gi went “No, no, no!” On whether there are plans for concerts in Southeast Asia – he said, “I would love to have concerts here if logistics like the venue and schedule permits. Nevertheless, I am thankful for all the fans who always support me at my fan meetings!”
Rounding off, Lee Seung Gi quipped, “It has been some time since my last visit, so I have been preparing a lot for the Singapore fans. I hope you are ready as much as I am!”
