Before joining LOEN Entertainment, IU had auditioned for JYP Entertainment, but she didn’t pass, and JYP himself admitted that it was a huge mistake to not accept her. Her stage name was derived from I & You, which symbolises how close she wants to be with her fans. IU debuted on September 24, 2008 with her first mini-album, “Lost and Found” in which she was praised for her strong vocals. Her first title song was “Lost Child“:
IU said that her debut was very difficult for her because for some reason the fans didn’t seem to accept her very much. However, she stood strong and soon became very famous.
On April 16, 2009, she came back with a full album titled “Growing Up” with the title song, “Boo“, a very cute song and very different from her debut one:
She came back with her second mini-album “IU… IM” on November 12, 2009, with the funny title song “Marshmallow“:
However, IU’s success skyrocketed in 2010, when she released her third mini-album, “Real“, with the tile song “Good Day“:
IU became very popular with the song because of her “3 High Notes”. After the release of the MV, many artists began to compete in many variety shows, trying to cover her high notes:
Her next comeback was on November 29, 2011, with her second full album, “Last Fantasy” and it’s title song “You and I“. The album achieved an “all-kill” on a variety of South Korean music charts, with all the tracks from the album making the top thirteen spots on Mnet, Olleh Music, and MelOn charts.
IU eventually had her Japanese debut and showed a very promising Japanese carreer, specially with the song “Beautiful Dancer“, that was released along with her second Japanese EP, “Can You Hear Me?“
As she became older, IU was asked about keeping her cute image, and she said she wasn’t planning on changing it so soon because she knew her fans wouldn’t like it. During her time as an artist, she was also involved in a very controversial dating rumor with Super Junior‘s Eunhyuk, and neither of them confirmed or denied it, but she still keeps in touch with lots of SM artists.
After a very long time and after delaying her comeback several times, IU finally released her third album, “Modern Times“, on October 8, 2013. Before her comeback, IU had released 7 videos teasers for her upcoming tracks, leaving fans dying of expectation. This album featured many famous artists such as SHINee‘s Jonghyun and Brown Eyed Girls‘ Gain. The title song, “The Red Shoes“, soon topped the charts, and she showed not only a perfect MV, but a perfect stage:
Her latest release was the repackage album of “Modern Times“, with the title song “Friday” featuring History‘s Jang Yi Jeon:
IU has been putting a lot of effort on promoting the rookie group HIGH4 recently, but she also plans to make a comeback soon, so let’s wait for her!
