4MINUTE has finally come back with their 5th mini album, “4MINUTE WORLD” after being gone almost a year, and they have sure shaken up everyone with their new songs.
The first song of the album, “Wait a Minute” is the perfect song for beginning an album. It is very happy and it makes you smile, so you’ll want to listen to the rest of the them. The girls seem to have had a lot of fun recording it, I wish they would release and MV for this song because it would be very funny to watch. Also, it kind of reminds me of a soldier march (I can almost see the girls with cute soldier uniforms), which could be their anthem and it just makes you want to follow them.
“Watcha Doin’ Today”, the title track, sounds more like their usual style. However, it may sound a little too much like it. The beginning of the song, especially, reminds me a lot of their songs from last year and so does the “Lalala” part of the song. The rest of the song, though, is very original and also pretty good. The chorus is very catchy and the raps are awesome, this funky style goes really well with the girls. It was also cool to hear Jiyoon’s strong rap even though she has a beautiful voice for singing.
Yet, the music video stood out way more than the song itself. It’s something that has never been seen in the K-Pop world. We have Hyuna dancing with girls in the middle of a street, Jiyoon doing suggestive moves in the bathroom, Soohyun acting like a mad clown, Gayoon dressed in boyish clothes and having many maids to serve her and Jihyun making boys make out with her magic candy. That’s not to mention the bathroom scene, where we see many controversial things happening all at the same time. It kind of looked like a female version of Block B’s “Very Good” MV, but in a different context.
Many people may take this the wrong way, but their intention is clear: they want to break stereotypes and stop prejudice, and the best way to do that is by exaggerating some scenes with a touch of fun to them. This is 4MINUTE. This is the message they want to pass: that they don’t judge and that they have lots of fun.
“I’ll Tell You” is by far the sexiest song of the album, from its beginning to its end. The lyrics are sung in the perfect tone and pronounced perfectly. This is the kind of song that doesn’t need a sexy choreography or revealing clothes to please the listeners and 4MINUTE manages to do it better than most groups.
“Come In”, Hyuna and Gayoon’s track is the most unique one. Even though its lyrics are really provocative, it has a smooth melody and it’s perfect to listen to anywhere and any time. Gayoon has a really beautiful voice and it was truly well used in this song. Hyuna has amazing rapping skills but people usually forget this because of her looks, which doesn’t happen in this song since she totally follows its vibe. This combination worked out really well, but since it doesn’t really fit 4MINUTE’s style, they could absolutely become a sub-unit.
“Thank you” is the perfect last song for this album. It has a “bossa nova” feeling and it’s awesome to hear 4MINUTE singing acoustic songs. When you listen to this song, you can almost feel like you’re in their concert and they’re singing while sitting on stools while the fans follow the rhythm with their light sticks. You feel like crying as when the concert is ending, and that’s exactly what makes you want to listen to the whole album one more time.
The whole album is a perfect mix of different styles that make 4MINUTE who they are. Make sure to buy it on Yesasia and also don’t forget to watch their MV:
