Story:
The girls debuted on March 7th, 2013 with “Bad Girls”. The day after their debut, their song charted high on real-time charts, ranking #8, #9, and #10 on Soribada, Daum, and Naver real-time charts, and ending up at #34 on the Gaon singles chart.
Their debut stage was on the same day of the MV release, on M!Countdown.
Their first mini album, “Code 01” had five tracks:
1. Intro… Bad Girl
2. 나쁜여자 (Bad Girl)
3. SuperGirl
4. Dada La
5. 안울래 (Not Crying)
After hitting the charts, the girls went on a hiatus and only came back on August 6th, 2013, with their first digital single “Hate You,” which went high on real-time charts, ranking #3, #8, and #11 on Bugs, Mnet, and Cyworld real-time charts.
This new MV really surprised everyone with a creepy atmosphere that was very different from their original style, but this was exactly what brought the video so many views.
For the fans sadness, they didn’t perform this song on music shows, but the girls promised to come back soon to the stage and they kept their promise by coming back with “Pretty Pretty” MV and “Code 02 Pretty Pretty” mini album.
The teasers for “Pretty Pretty” left the fans really excited because most of them showed the girls as not pretty at all, leaving everyone wondering about the story of their upcoming video. In fact, it was a critic for the girls who only seek beauty above all. Check it out:
With this video, Ladies’ Code began to show the world that they could adapt to any concept and that they were different from everyone in the K-Pop world. The video was very praised by Wonder Girls‘ Sun, who said that it reminded her of the “Tell Me” and “So Hot” days.
Their second mini album contained five more tracks:
1. Polaris Club
2. 예뻐 예뻐 (Pretty Pretty)
3. Hate You
4. I’m Fine Thank You
5. 예뻐 예뻐 (Instrumental)
It seems that they took Sun’s compliment seriously becuase their most recent comeback was compared a lot to Wonder Girls. “So Wonderful” is another critic, this time to men who only see women as objects and it does remind a lot of Wonder Girls’ “Nobody.” The girls felt very honored to be compared to such a famous group.
Their MV arrived at the perfect time. The K-Pop world was facing the crisis of the sexy concepts of the girl groups and many choreographies and outfits were being banned for being considered too revealing. Ladies’ Code’s concept wasn’t sexy compared to the controversial ones, but they were able to show their feminine and mature side perfectly.
Ashley explained, “Even if we were to show the sexy code later, it wouldn’t be too late, anyway. We wanted to show more of the retro and punk style we showed in our first and second albums” and EunB said that they wanted to show sexyness with just their gaze and movements.
Ladies’ Code have even won as New Artist of the Year at Gaon Chart Awards, so you sure wanna keep an eye on them. Let’s see what else these girls will show to impress us.
