A.Kor is a rookie band that debuted last year, and is mostly known for their maknae Kemy‘s diss track towards Park Bom of 2ne1, a stunt that set many a K-Pop fans against the group and has put them on somewhat of a back foot. But in the camp of bad press is still press, I never had heard of A.kor until the scandal happened. Going into listening this for the first time I tried to remove the scandal from the song in my mind; usually this is no problem for me but I consider myself to be a casual Blackjack. However, it was for this reason that I really liked the song.
I’m just going to come out and say it: “Always” by A.kor sounds exactly like 2ne1 circa 2011.
Compare the opening sequence of this song to “Ugly“‘s opening sequence. The effects used make them sound very similar, even though the notes hit are not exactly the same. Then at 0:15 of “Always” A.kor’s novice CL doppleganger comes in and starts rapping pretty forcefully, and the second rapper (which I believe is Kemy) continues that flow. Then at 0:45 of “Always” we have a chorus that sounds weirdly like Dara and Bom had a K-Pop baby that sings choruses. Then the verse at 1:17 sounds like it was from “Ugly” again. Every little bit of this song reminds me of some small part of a song that I’ve heard from 2ne1.
Kemy does a diss track insulting Park Bom and then her band puts out a song that sounds like the 2ne1 of yesteryear? If that isn’t irony, I’m not sure what is. What do you think?
