5 members of Tahiti‘s usual 7 came back on January 12th, 2015 with the single “Phone Number“, and a music video that might as well have been sponsored by rotary dial phones and leather pants. The song relies heavily on multiple styles of piano work, switching between what sounds like a regular stand up piano and an electronic organ. The (albeit slightly repetitive) piano sections and an upbeat tempo allowed the ladies of Tahiti to lay down some sick power vocals that pulled the song right out of the forgettable category. The only problem with the track is the way they sing the words “phone number” and “call me” in the chorus, which is a simple half step change that is especially pleasing when singing in a jazzy/blues-y/swing-y sort of way, except when that note switch is repeated 10 times in each chorus. Unfortunately, they achieved what they set out to do, in that the chorus will be stuck in my head for the next week and I will kick myself for wanting to sing it.
As for the video, I can’t help but to compare it to Hello Venus, who also just released a sexy concept. “Phone Number’s” choreography is in a similar sexy vein, but relies on moving slowly and sleekly, almost like a Korean idol version of a cat. And yet, even though the dances are very sexy, as well as the solo shots, I feel like I got to see the sexy version of Tahiti, instead of a mash of body parts, which honestly makes all the difference. This was achieved by using wide shots and bright lighting that allowed the viewer to see the stars faces as they were doing the dance moves. When there were portions of the dance that focused on the legs or the butt, in most of the shots another idol’s face would be present. The only portion of the dance I didn’t enjoy was the portion where they took a wide stance and slid their hands right into their crotch. This move would have been perfect if they had slid their hand right on top of their same side thigh and kept the wide stance. I just was not nearly prepared enough for that move in a 15 rated music video, especially when it looks verrrrrrrrrrry sexual. Move of the video has to be the sexy dialing of the rotary dial telephone during the first portion of the chorus.
Other slight annoyances with the music video are the font used in the title, which didn’t fit with the theme and looked cheap. I also didn’t like how much screentime the male idol received without tying him into the plot more solidly. His involvement in the video involves him… standing. In front of flashing lights, as a leaning post for Tahiti. Replace him with a cardboard cut out and it probably would have amounted to the same thing. But the best thing about the problems that I have, is that its really just me nitpicking. The music video is so solid, I have to comment about small things like font. Companies, take note. This is how you make a sexy concept while still respecting your artists. Well done Tahiti and Dream Star Entertainment, looking forward to the live stages and future comebacks!
