Skull, considered to be the founding father of Korean reggae, makes a comeback with “Ooh Baby.” I had not heard of Skull prior to this music video and when I heard it was Korean reggae I was not sure how it would work out. This is Skull’s first major album around 10 years and reports says that the most money was spent on this album compared to all his other music. But it is also the closest and purest to Skull’s original music one that he passionate cares about.
Now it is time for some honesty. I did not like the music video. I can appreciate the fact that he traveled around the Caribbean to get the right look and feel for the music video. But the music video looks to be shoot through an odd filter that gives everything a funny white/grey look to it. Some of the scenes also seemed a bit forced, awkward, and a bit pointless.
Musically it is a perfectly acceptable song. Is it the greatest song this year? No, not in my opinion but it is also not a complete assault on the ears ether. I was not in love with the song either at first. That was because I was listening to it as a Korean reggae song , so I tried again and listened to it as just a reggae song. Once I had done that it was a lot more enjoyable. It is not quite reggae and not quite dancehall either but a combination of the two styles. It would be a nice addition to a summer time playlist, and it would also be a conversation starter amongst your friends. If you like the song or you curious what the rest of the album is like it is be sure to check out his new album “King O Irie.”
